Official Twilight Zone comic book series announced by IDW Publishing — what to know

Entitled “Blanks,” this initial tale is the brainchild of writing talent Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns) and artist Morgan Beem (Swamp Thing: Twin Branches). As of now, specific storyline facts remain absent from our world. However, the cover art for “Blanks” hints at a realm inhabited by shadowy figures without faces, reminiscent of Slenderman entities.

Watters stated, ‘The Twilight Zone’ stands alone as a unique genre. It’s an iconic giant in pop culture, guiding us through the most peculiar skies, showcasing the power of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. It illuminates uncomfortable truths about our inner selves. Our story aims to draw from this same well; exploring the unsettling realm that is quintessentially ‘The Twilight Zone’, a space that lies between anger and unease.’

For a long time, I’ve been drawn to horror stories, but the ones that gradually unsettle you are particularly special to me. Few series have managed to evoke this sensation like ‘The Twilight Zone‘,” said Beem. “They create an atmosphere similar to being trapped in a dream feverishly or moving through a threshold area. These stories play with the feeling of discomfort, of things not quite right. This is the feeling that Dan has brilliantly portrayed in our story, and I hope it will permeate the artwork, stirring something within you even when you’re asleep at night. It may not scare you outright, but it might linger in your thoughts during the wee hours.

The final four stories will provide surprising conclusions thanks to Tom Scioli (from “I Am Stan: A Graphic Biography of Stan Lee”), James Stokoe (from “Godzilla: The Half-Century War”), Nate Powell (from “Swallow Me Whole”), and Francesco Francavilla (known for “Jock”). Notably, this series represents the first official continuation of the popular IP since the Jordan Peele-produced remake that took place some years ago. This specific version, however, seems to echo the various anthologies of short stories inspired by Rod Serling’s “Twilight Zone.

Since I was a child, I’ve dreamt about crafting a tale reminiscent of “The Twilight Zone”. I often pondered if such a feat was within my reach. “How does one construct a timeless piece?” The “Twilight Zone” revolutionized television by adopting the structure of comic books, specifically the sci-fi/horror anthology with literary aspirations, unexpected twists, and a thoughtful social commentary. It challenged the boundaries of commercial TV, and now, I aim to test the limits of comic books, stretching them to their absolute capacity and beyond. With such towering expectations in mind, I’ve devised something that I respectfully present for your consideration.

Co-editor Ellen Boener summarized: “These comics are for anyone who, like me, yearned for more installments of the original series. We’re blending the cinematic charm of yesteryears with the profound human emotion. Each aspect is a heartfelt tribute to the TV show – from the monochrome design to the interconnected covers, right down to the storytelling approach. Each issue functions as an exclusive gateway into another realm, with some of the brightest minds in comics leading the way. I can hardly wait to unveil the discoveries these creators have made.

The Twilight Zone #1 goes on sale from IDW Wednesday, September 24.
