As a long-time fan of The Umbrella Academy, I must admit that I was left scratching my head after watching the fourth season. It seems like the writers took a detour from the well-crafted narrative we’ve come to expect, leaving many loose ends dangling and questions unanswered.

Spoiler Alert! Major spoilers ahead for The Umbrella Academy.

The Umbrella Academy is a series that revolves around an unusual family: seven superpowered children adopted by one alien father, along with their estranged dad, Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Over four seasons, the story unfolds as this father prioritizes their powers over their emotions. The team consists of Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castaneda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Ben (Justin H. Min), and Viktor (Elliot Page). Each member has experienced manipulation and abuse by their father, which is a recurring theme throughout the series.

1. Luther remained on the moon for a prolonged duration without any explanation (later discovered in Season 4 that he was guarding Reginald’s wife Abigail without his knowledge); Five utilized time travel as his ability, accidentally blinking himself into the future where he became trapped for several years; and Viktor possessed such immense power that his father suppressed his abilities and wiped his memory of ever having them. Incidentally, Ben has passed away.

It’s evident that these siblings face more than their usual share of difficulties, yet they’ve consistently been there for one another in crucial moments across four seasons. However, the storyline has left us pondering unanswered questions, and we’ll delve into some of them in this discussion, particularly those raised during the last season.

Reginald and Abigail Hargreeves Are Aliens, But What Does That Mean?

The series emphasizes Reginald and Abigail Hargreeves as extraterrestrials, hinting at their prolonged existence. They’ve been on Earth since the early 1900s, arriving when their home planet faced an apocalypse. However, despite setting up this premise, we were given minimal insights into their physical forms or abilities. Therefore, I can’t help but wonder why it was crucial to present them as aliens if their characteristics remained largely unexplored.

After discovering that Abigail was behind the catastrophe of Season 4, and that she intentionally brought it about, she explains to Reginald that her actions were required because she deserved to die for creating Marigold and Durango, and his activities on this planet were arrogance. However, what’s puzzling is why Reginald ultimately agrees with her, and why Abigail decides to destroy the Earth as a form of self-punishment and to punish Reginald, given that she had already destroyed another planet. Isn’t that sufficient retribution?

How Did Jennifer Get in the Squid?

As a die-hard fan of The Umbrella Academy, I was left puzzled when we uncovered the truth about what truly befell Ben in season four. We learned that as youngsters, he and a girl, an adolescent Jennifer, were ruthlessly slain by Reginald when Ben accidentally opened the crate where she was imprisoned. The final scene showed them both bleeding out on the floor. So here’s my conundrum: how on earth did Jennifer wind up as the squid? Even if Ben transformed into the squid in his demise, it remains unclear how Jennifer managed to get inside him — or why she’s still alive.

Additionally, one might wonder why Luther didn’t recall the incident from Season 4, given that in Season 3, he informed Ben of the Sparrow Academy about the Umbrella Academy’s Ben’s demise during the “Jennifer Incident.” Although he didn’t explain what that referred to, it’s evident he was aware of the truth behind Ben’s fate at that time. It’s puzzling why he forgot about it six years later.

What Happened to Sloane? And Why Is Claire Still Alive?

In the final moments of Season 3, the siblings reappear in a new timeline, yet Sloane (Genesis Rogriguez), who was part of the Sparrow Academy and married to Luther, is absent, while Luther, who was supposedly dead, is present instead. As Luther searches for Sloane, it seems she doesn’t exist in this reality. However, everyone else, including her, survived the Kugelblitz, except for Luther. This raises a question: Why has Luther been resurrected while Sloane appears to be missing? Did Reginald barter her life for Luther’s? There is no clear answer provided, and Sloane’s significance diminishes in Season 4, with only occasional mentions from Luther. Given her significant role in the previous season, this absence feels unusual.

Additionally, given all that transpired, how is it that Claire, Allison’s daughter, and Diego’s children are still alive if their biological parents no longer exist? It could be that Lila, Diego’s wife and the mother of his children, employed the trains to travel between timelines to shield them from the Cleanse. However, even in this scenario, if their parents never came into existence — meaning they were not born into this world — it appears inconceivable that their kids could still exist.

1. These issues lack satisfactory explanations, and there are additional puzzles as well. For instance, why did Luther revert to an ape form following the Marigold dose in Season 4, given that his previous ape body was due to surgery, not the Marigold? Also, why do some of the siblings display unique or amplified powers after consuming the Marigold, while others seem unaffected? Lastly, what was Ben up to on that train at the end of Season 3, and why wasn’t this thread picked up again in Season 4?

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but express my thoughts on the fourth season. While it was short, comprising only six episodes, it left many viewers, including myself, feeling underwhelmed – a stark contrast to the fantastic three seasons that preceded it. I believe some aspects were overlooked or forgotten by the writers, which may have contributed to this disappointment.
