Apart from its captivating graphics and spellbinding storylines, anime stands out predominantly due to its larger-than-life characters. Whether they’re heroes or villains, these characters boast extraordinary abilities that make them almost invincible. Despite wielding such immense power, their roles often demand the carrying of an entire series. In contrast to each superhero lead, there exists a supporting character whose depth and complexity overshadow raw power. At times, a character’s vulnerabilities can bring an unexpected richness to the narrative.
As an enthusiast, I find it amusing rather than frustrating when underdeveloped characters stumble and falter. Their reliance on others to turn things around fosters a more authentic bond among the cast. Thus, it’s essential to acknowledge these unsung heroes, as their flaws have made them stand out in a memorable way. In fact, they add a touch of endearment, humor, and emotion to the genre, making us root for them. But remember, don’t be fooled by their apparent weakness because these anime underdogs bring an enchanting charm and depth to the stories we love.

Ciel Phantomhive – ‘Black Butler’
Black Butler narrates the somber and intricate storyline of Ciel Phantomhive, the 12-year-old overseer of the Phantomhive manor, who endures the heartbreaking demise of his parents. As the family head, he is responsible for resolving mysteries and preserving order in Victorian England during that era. However, upon striking a pact with a demon named Sebastian, who faithfully serves as his butler, Ciel gains the means to seek vengeance for his family’s tragic end.
Including Ciel Phantomhive in a list of the weakest anime characters might surprise some people. Despite being clever, intelligent, influential, and wealthy, Ciel’s physical vulnerability and dependence on Sebastian reveal his underlying weaknesses. He rarely manages to take care of himself, has minimal fighting skills, and tends to crumble under pressure, making him an attractive target for his adversaries.

Hiyori Iki – ‘Noragami’
As I sat down in the dimly lit cinema, I found myself swept away by the captivating tale unfolding on screen. The protagonist, Hiyori Iki, appears as an average high school student – but little did she know that fate had other plans for her. In a twist of events, Hiyori crosses paths with an enigmatic deity named Yato, whose life she miraculously saves. This encounter, however, has far-reaching consequences, as it draws Hiyori into the realm of gods and spirits.
The incident, though a miracle for Yato, turned out to be a brush with death for Hiyori – leaving her in a peculiar condition. Her soul now slips out of her physical body at odd moments, rendering her neither completely human nor fully spirit. This extraordinary predicament sets the stage for an intriguing journey filled with mystery, self-discovery, and the exploration of the bond between humans and divine beings.
In the captivating world of Hiyori Iki, I find myself awestruck by Hiyori’s unique ability to engage with the mystical realms inhabited by deities. Witnessing her gradual immersion into this divine sphere is nothing short of mesmerizing. Yet, there’s a stark vulnerability that surfaces alongside her strength.
In the spirit realm, her condition frequently leaves her powerless, making her an easy target for malevolent spirits. Her bravery and resolve are undeniable, but they offer scant protection against these supernatural perils. Instead, she seems to serve as a catalyst, spurring growth in other characters rather than relying on her own power. Despite her strong bond with Yato, she remains vulnerable in this extraordinary realm.

Nunnally Lamperouge – ‘Code Geass’
Remarkably well-loved among anime enthusiasts, Code Geass centers around Lelouch Lamperouge, a former prince in exile who acquires extraordinary power and initiates a rebellion against the oppressive Holy Britannian Empire that governs Japan. The series delves into Lelouch’s transformation from an outsider to assuming the disguise of Zero and overthrowing the oppressive rule.
I, Nunnally Lamperouge, find myself in the midst of chaos despite having no hand in the initial conflict. As the cherished younger sister of the main character, my tranquil existence is endangered by the unfolding events that envelop me within the broader tapestry of this series. With a profound impact on Lelouch’s driving forces, I am a fragile figure – blinded and paralyzed due to past trauma. In stark contrast to the intense battles and high-stakes political intrigue that dominate this narrative, I become a target for threats.
17
Yuki Cross – ‘Vampire Knight’
In the enchantingly eerie realm of ‘Vampire Knight’, a place where humans and bloodsuckers dwell harmoniously at the esteemed Cross Academy, we delve into the life of Yuki Cross, a guardian of the academy and the adopted daughter of its headmaster. Yuki’s duties involve safeguarding the secret vampire society while grappling with her own past. However, as human-vampire tensions escalate, Yuki finds herself ensnared in a love triangle: her childhood friend, Zero, a hunter of the undead, and Kaname, a noble vampire who had previously rescued her from certain doom.
Even though Yuki is a significant figure in the series, she has obvious flaws that stand out. For instance, she struggles to use the anti-vampire weapon she’s given responsibly, and often relies on others for safety. These vulnerabilities make her an excellent fit for this list. Yuki is emotionally and physically reliant on Kaname and Zero, and her storyline frequently presents her as needing rescue.

Tsukune Aono – ‘Rosario + Vampire’
In the captivating realm of “Rosario + Vampire”, I, an average teenager named Tsukune Aono, embark on an extraordinary journey. As a student at Yokai Academy, a unique institution catering to supernatural beings, I thought my life would continue as usual. However, destiny had other plans when I struck a bond with Moka Akashiya, a mesmerizing vampire who stands by me as both protector and love interest. Now, amidst this school filled with the extraordinary, I strive to find my place while ensuring my survival, being the sole human in this enchanting world.
In the captivating world of Rosario + Vampire, I can’t help but admit my personal observation: I’m not endowed with extraordinary abilities like most characters in this anime, and that’s where Tsukune Aono stands out, or rather, struggles to fit in. His predicament stems from his unique lack of supernatural powers, which often leaves him relying excessively on the leading ladies – Moka and her comrades – for protection. The series is a delightful blend of humor, action, and romance, but it’s Tsukune’s journey to find his niche in this world that seems fundamentally opposed to him that truly captivates me.
15
Minoru Mineta – ‘My Hero Academia’
In a series like “My Hero Academia,” where characters’ abilities play a significant role and teenagers acquire superpowers known as “Quirks,” it’s quite intriguing how a seemingly weaker character like Minoru Mineta complements the storyline so perfectly. Despite being about good versus evil at its core, it’s Mineta who adds an element of fun to the show. His unique Quirk, Pop-Off, enables him to produce round ball-like objects from the top of his head.
In terms of practicality, they quickly regrow and possess a strong adhesive quality. However, Minoru’s character is timid, which not only diminishes his full potential but also disrupts tense scenes of action and emotion. As an assistant, he might be somewhat beneficial, but when it comes to strength, Minoru is infamous for becoming paralyzed with fear.
14
Mumen Rider – ‘One Punch Man’
Title “One Punch Man” suggests it’s about an incredibly powerful superhero who can vanquish his foes with just one punch. Despite its simplicity, this premise satirizes common anime tropes featuring overpowered characters. In the midst of this scenario is a cyclist named Mumen Rider, a C-class member of the Heroes Association who’s not particularly strong.
In my role as a follower, I’m all about standing up for justice and engaging in battles, but it’s determination, not brute force, that drives me. My character is guided by a strong moral compass, always steering me towards the right path. I strive to be an inspiration and show kindness in every situation. Despite lacking any superpowers beyond being an exceptional cyclist, I’ve managed to navigate through seemingly insurmountable obstacles and have made efforts to save lives whenever possible.
13
Mr. Satan – ‘Dragon Ball Z’
In the realm of anime enthusiasts, the series “Dragon Ball Z” showcases the epic battles between the Z warriors, headed by Goku, against various cosmic threats. However, it’s important to note that Mr. Satan is quite a comedic character. Despite his strength surpassing most Earthlings, when placed alongside the abilities, intelligence, and might of the Saiyans, he appears insignificant.
In a nutshell, the once powerful martial artist, Mr. Satan, who’s past his prime and Earth’s self-proclaimed guardian, frequently jumps into fights alongside Goku or Gohan, claiming victories that aren’t truly his. Yet, his antics bring humor, warmth, and a touch of comic relief to the action-packed series. The one instance where his weakness hinted at unrealized potential was when he managed to befriend a significant adversary from the show.
12
Honoka Takamiya – ‘Witch Craft Works’
Amidst the enchanting setting of Tongetsu Academy, a magic school, the anime titled “Witch Craft Works” unfolds. The story revolves around Kagari Ayaka, a girl who appears ordinary but harbors great magical powers secretly. Sitting beside her is Honoka Takamiya, a second-year student, devoid of any magical abilities.
In essence, Honoka often finds himself in peril whenever he interacts with Ayaka, due to her having a fanatic following who are prepared to attack anyone they deem as getting too close. Yet, somehow, he manages to stay alive amidst these powerfully witchy individuals, thanks to Anaka’s covert protection. As the story unfolds, we discover that Honoka harbors an unknown power deep within himself.
Honoka frequently puts his life on the line when he tries to speak with Ayaka because she is surrounded by a group of fans who are eager for a fight. However, he continues to live among these potent witches due to Anaka’s hidden defense. As we progress through the narrative, it becomes clear that Honoka possesses an undiscovered power.
11
Takemichi Hanagaki – ‘Tokyo Revengers’
In the world of anime, it’s common for main characters to be strong and powerful. However, “Tokyo Revengers” takes a different approach and immerses us in a complex tale of betrayal, time travel, and exhilarating action. The protagonist, a 26-year-old named Takemichi Hanagaki, is far from ordinary. His mission is to prevent the death of his middle school girlfriend by traveling back in time and becoming part of a gang to protect her.
At first, Takemichi’s frailty and constant fear seem destined for failure, as his half-committed attempts show little promise. What makes matters worse is that he lacks the mental strength or resolve to stand up for himself. Consequently, he experiences an alarmingly frequent number of beatings in his struggle to alter the future. In essence, Takemichi is far from a compelling hero – both physically and emotionally resilient.
10
Dimple – ‘Mob Psycho 100’
Mob Psycho 100, an anime from recent years, is relatively underrated despite its abundance of action, humor, impressive fight scenes, and exceptional soundtrack. The story revolves around a boy named Seigeo Kageyama, or Mob, who has psychic abilities (espers). Despite his efforts to suppress his powers and keep his emotions in check, Mob frequently finds himself in precarious situations that make it challenging for him to do so.
Dimple serves as a companion to Mob, who was formerly an upper-class evil spirit but now exists in a weakened state. Previously defeated by Mob, Dimple no longer possesses full powers and can only observe from the sidelines during Mob’s battles. However, he compensates with sarcastic remarks and comments, adding a touch of humor to the situation.
9
Hawk – ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’
This anime revolves around a band of knights, wrongly accused of treason and subsequently disbanded. They are led by Elizabeth, the princess of Britannia, in their quest to reclaim their honor from oppressors. Among them is Hawk, a chatty pig who inadvertently becomes Meliodas’s companion and joins the group of warriors on their journey.
In another words, although he’s not actually a knight, he tackles problems with great zeal – yet consistently falls short. He possesses some notable traits, such as an exceptional sense of smell that allows him to detect foes from a distance and the ability to assimilate magical abilities upon consuming them. Nevertheless, Hawk is portrayed as a less effective character in “The Seven Deadly Sins” because he cannot capitalize on these powers during physical conflicts when they are most needed.
8
Magikarp – ‘Pokémon’
As a passionate connoisseur of animated cinema, I’d like to highlight one timeless masterpiece that has captivated audiences worldwide: Pokémon. This long-standing anime revolves around my character, Ash Ketchum, who embarks on an extraordinary journey collecting and battling pocket monsters in a breathtaking spectacle. From the mighty Arceus, Mewtwo, Zyagarde, and Lugia, to some less formidable creatures, the series offers a rich tapestry of characters.
Magikarp is a Pokémon resembling a weak, large-scaled, wide-mouthed fish, known for its vacant eyes and tendency to flop around on its belly during battles. Fans often view it as a helpless creature due to this behavior. Yet, despite its seemingly useless nature in combat, Magikarp has a hidden potential. It eventually transforms into the powerful Gyarados, proving that even the undervalued can become mighty under the right circumstances.
7
Yamcha – ‘Dragon Ball Z’
In the initial “Dragon Ball” series released in 1986, Yamcha was a formidable enemy who eventually became an ally to Son Goku. His power surpassed that of his friends significantly. Yet, as we moved into “Dragon Ball Z”, where mighty cosmic warriors engaged in epic battles and fresh, stronger characters emerged, Yamcha faded into a humorous reminder of the past.
Regardless of his tireless attempts, he inevitably faced defeat against adversaries far superior in strength. However, it’s crucial to remember that these battles served to highlight the prowess of his opponents. In what seemed like an uphill battle, Yamcha, despite being the weakest, never wavered in his loyalty towards his friends. Throughout the series, he stood as a steadfast companion, ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with his powerful allies.
6
Buggy The Clown – ‘One Piece’
Exploring the outrageously amazing escapades of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate gang, One Piece tells the story of their journey to become the King of Pirates and discover a legendary treasure once owned by Gold Roger. Buggy the Clown Star is a tall, blue-haired pirate captain leading the Buggy Pirates.
In terms of appearance and behavior, Buggy bears a resemblance to a jester. His antics, while often failing, have a knack for causing more trouble than they’re worth. Despite playing the role of an adversary in the series, his comedic blunders during tense, edge-of-your-seat adventures provide a welcome dose of humor. Additionally, like Luffy, Buggy ingested a Devil Fruit, but its influence on him pales in comparison to other users.
5
Udon Ise – ‘Naruto’
Udon Ise, from the Naruto series, yearns to be a ninja despite not having any innate abilities.
In his youth, Udon was known for being gentle and reserved, but as he matured, he became even more laid-back and easily dismissed. Despite this, he rose to become the leader of Team 5. However, throughout the Naruto saga, his persistent struggle with mastering techniques, including fundamental ninjutsu, frequently hampered the team’s progress and strained relationships among its members. His physical frailty was often compensated for by his kind-heartedness and determination.
4
Ichiya – ‘Fairy Tail’
In a delightful blend of action, humor, and personal growth, Fairy Tail chronicles the adventures of two wizards – Lucy, a celestial mage, and Natsu, a dragon-slayer mage – who unexpectedly form a friendship before joining forces on numerous tasks with fellow members from their guild. Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki, an eccentric and flamboyant perfume connoisseur, heads The Trimes and frequently enlists the help of his teammates in his unconventional endeavors.
Despite being renowned as a “master” within the Blue Pegasus Guild of wizards, he is both irritating and inefficient. His ability, which imbues foes with scents and supposedly induces alterations, seems more like a hindrance than an asset in battle. In other words, it’s questionable how useful this skill would be on the battlefield.
3
Oolong – ‘Dragon Ball Z’
In the realm of Dragon Ball Z, there’s another figure named Oolong who is generally less powerful than the other cosmic warriors. This character, interestingly enough, transforms into a pig. Due to his nature, he frequently relies on others for protection rather than relying on his own strength. In a direct confrontation, Oolong wouldn’t stand a chance against an adversary. Even in a contest of cunning and intellect, there are several characters in the series who would outsmart him comfortably.
Despite being cowardly and greedy, Oolong’s actions serve as comical relief as the story progresses into more serious and tense moments. His frequent flirting, avoidance of fights, and tendency to take a backseat are characteristics that satirize typical machismo often found in battle anime. This character underscores the idea that even those perceived as weak can bring laughter and joy.
2
Yukiteru Amano – ‘Future Diary’
In true fashion, Future Diary is an anime that seamlessly combines elements of fantasy, action, time travel, and romance, all revolving around the narrative of Yukiteru Amano, a timid high school student with a penchant for his phone, meticulously logging his daily activities. Unbeknownst to him, he finds himself in a struggle against multiple individuals for divine control over the universe, as he unknowingly possesses a diary capable of predicting the future.
However, Yukiteru lacks significant strengths compared to other Future Diary holders, making him seem less intelligent among them. His inactivity often allows others to exploit his power for harmful purposes. Remarkably, his sole chance at survival hinges on Yuno Gasai, another Future Diary holder who is utterly enamored with Yukiteru and will tirelessly work to safeguard him.
1
Kon – ‘Bleach’
In the captivating anime known as Bleach, Ichigo Kurosaki serves as the central figure. This show revolves around souls transforming into Soul Reapers and engaging in combat against spectral beasts. Among the powerful characters of this series, there’s a character who appears less frightening and somewhat timid – Kon.
Kon is a toy lion that appears to be alive but remains confined within its stuffed form due to being a Modified Soul with no inherent abilities. Despite this, Kon often serves as comic relief. However, he has a confident demeanor, viewing himself as invincible and the ruler of New York, King of New York. Essentially, his existence is like an unbreakable grin, as Ichigo frequently amuses himself by teasing him.
