The Well

Beware! The following contains spoilers for the third episode of Doctor Who‘s season 15, titled “The Well.” This episode features a return of a monster seen in David Tennant’s 2008 episode, with a significant difference from its original appearance. Unlike before, when it was mainly presented as an invisible or shapeless entity, this time the creature is fully revealed to the audience. The villain from the fourth season’s “Midnight” was previously known for relying heavily on viewers’ imaginations to create fear, but its reappearance in “The Well” breaks away from that pattern in several ways. One of the most noticeable changes is that this time around, it requires less reliance on the audience’s imagination.

In the encounter between David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor and the unnamed beast from “Midnight,” viewers mainly saw its form when it spoke through Lesley Sharp’s character, Sky Silvestry. Unlike Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor, he doesn’t get a direct view of the creature, but he gets a clearer idea of what his long-time foe appears like when it doesn’t conceal itself within or behind another life form. Viewers don’t get as close an angle as the Fifteenth Doctor does, but it offers a better sneak peek than what was presented in “Midnight.

If You Pause At The Right Time, You Can See A Glimpse Of Doctor Who’s “The Well” Monster

The creature from “Midnight” finally shows itself

In the episode, several characters seem to catch glimpses of something lurking behind Aliss Fenly (Rose Ayling-Ellis), yet “The Well” mainly confines these instances to swift, elusive shadows that quickly vanish. However, there’s a close-up of this entity at approximately the 21:22 mark, where it peeks around Aliss’ head to examine Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu). It disappears almost instantly after appearing, but it’s the most distinct portrayal of the monster so far.

Fortunately, “The Well” doesn’t fully unravel the mystery, as the monster remains largely shrouded by Aliss. The visible aspects of it are hard to discern clearly, but one thing is certain: it’s not a humanoid life form. Instead, it appears as a dark mass, with its surface adorned with distinctive markings that could be eyes or something else entirely. The creature’s existence on the harsh surface of Midnight, now known as Planet 6767, was bound to produce an alien with an unusual appearance, and “The Well” offers a glimpse of this.

What We Know About The Monster From Doctor Who‘s “The Well” & “Midnight”

2025’s surprise sequel reveals more about the Doctor Who villain than the original episode did

In the story “The Well,” the monster, which can inhabit other beings and manipulate them, is introduced as something that derives twisted pleasure from causing disharmony among people. It pushes individuals to the edge of violence by playing with them, often inciting conflict. However, it doesn’t present a direct physical threat when it meets Ten. Instead, Fifteen faces a unique challenge in this narrative.

In the 3rd episode of season 15 of “Doctor Who,” the creature from “Midnight” clings to other beings, but instead of fully taking them over, it remains stationary right behind them. If someone steps behind both the creature and its host, they are instantly killed. This terrifying being had been concealed in Midnight’s diamond mines for a staggering 400,000 years due to significant alterations on the planet’s surface. Its objective was to depart from this world and cause further destruction across the “Doctor Who” universe, which it successfully accomplished by the end of its second appearance.
