‘The Wheel of Time’ Canceled at Amazon’s Prime Video After Three Seasons

The Wheel of Time has been canceled after three seasons at Amazon‘s Prime Video streamer.

The third season finale of the TV show, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, and adapted from Robert Jordan’s popular fantasy novel series, was broadcast on April 17.

In that period, the showrunner, Rafe Judkins, who was responsible for adapting the series for television, spoke about the show’s uncertain future during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Judkins inquired from Amazon about the ultimate goal of the series. He expressed his desire to present the complete series and sought advice on the most effective way to achieve this.

He explained that his creative team and he decided on Amazon primarily because the streaming service seemed like a platform committed to investing in series for the long haul. Many places are no longer doing this. For “The Wheel of Time,” it’s crucial that we’re associated with a place that intends to invest in shows for the long term, not just for temporary hype and departure.

He mentioned his intention to complete the narrative, discussing how the season finale had laid out numerous plot points for the upcoming season. However, the recent cancellation announcement on Friday may cut the story short before its natural conclusion, although the third season finale did tie up some significant story arcs.

Judkins expressed that the story is significant due to its extensive length and improvement as it progresses. He noted that both the books and the show are growing stronger with each installment, and he hopes they can continue this trajectory if given the chance. However, he acknowledges that television is currently trending towards shorter, more fleeting content. Yet, Judkins emphasizes that television’s true strength lies in long-form storytelling, where viewers become invested in characters and follow their journeys over 60 to 100 hours. He believes this is what television excels at and surpasses movies in accomplishing. Therefore, he expresses optimism for the future of television that series like Wheel of Time can tell their complete stories, as it’s crucial and represents the best of television.

The third series, heavily influenced by “The Shadow Rising,” the fourth novel in Robert Jordan’s series, has been previewed by Prime Video prior to its release. According to them, this season follows Moiraine Damodred (played by Rosamund Pike), a strong Aes Sedai, who is troubled by her visions of the future, and Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) as he grapples with his role as the Dragon Reborn. He must decide whether to uphold the Light or succumb to the Darkness. The viewers will be taken to various new regions and cities across the Westlands continent, including the vast deserts of the Aiel Waste, the seductive yet perilous port city of Tanchico, and the enigmatic, fog-enshrouded ancient city of Rhuidean, where both Moiraine and Rand will encounter transformative realizations. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world in Rand’s hometown of Two Rivers, his longtime friend Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford) sets off on a personal voyage that will forever alter him.

In addition to Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, Dónal Finn, Ceara Coveney, Kate Fleetwood, Ayoola Smart, and Kae Alexander, the series boasts an impressive ensemble cast. The third season introduced Shohreh Aghdashloo as Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan, a significant Aes Sedai member. Joining for season three were Olivia Williams, Luke Fetherston, Callum Kerr, Nuno Lopes, Isabella Bucceri, Nukâka Coster-Waldau, Salóme Gunnarsdóttir, Björn Landberg, and Synnøve Macody Lund.

Judkins functioned as the executive producer alongside Rick Selvage, Larry Mondragon from Iwot Productions; Ted Field of Radar Pictures; and a group consisting of Mike Weber, Marigo Kehoe, Ciaran Donnelly, Justine Juel Gillmer, Dave Hill, and Pike.
