Ben Kutchins, the director of photography, decided to emphasize a particularly tense scene from episode three of The White Lotus‘s third season – featuring Walton Goggins as Rick and Aimee Lou Wood as Chelsea at a Thai snake show – due to its genuinely alarming aspect: the utilization of genuine snakes. Unlike many scenes filmed during the six-month production period for the series, this was one of the “infrequent instances where we actually storyboarded” according to Kutchins. This meant that they were precise about the arrangement of various snakes and the location of specific events.
Despite careful preparations, Goggins – not fond of reptiles – did receive a bite from a snake. The director confirmed that it was harmless as the snake wasn’t venomous. “He was an incredibly dedicated actor,” said the DP, “but the experience was absolutely terrifying for him. He was petrified and his fear is evident in his eyes.
Filming Goggins as he navigated through two panes of glass, separated by a snake enclosure in Koh Samui, Thailand, required meticulous illumination of the environment. According to Kutchins, “The selected location was quite dim and drab, so I opted to infuse some vibrancy and warmth.” He proceeded to apply various shades of yellow, orange, and red filters on the plexiglass windows, followed by the addition of fluorescents to create cool blue-green accents in the shadows.
In the subsequent part of the scene, it turns out that Chelsea’s snakebite wasn’t real; rather, Kutchins clarified, “What appeared to be a venomous cobra bite on her was actually a prosthetic limb getting bitten by a genuine snake.
