- Doug Cockle’s Return as Geralt Bodes Well for ‘The Witcher‘ Franchise
- Netflix Should Make More Animated ‘Witcher’ Adaptations
Despite many “The Witcher” fans being disappointed by Henry Cavill’s exit from the Netflix series, the upcoming Season 4 with Liam Hemsworth in the lead role doesn’t seem to spark much enthusiasm among viewers. However, with Netflix’s upcoming “Witcher” film set to release on the platform in February, it appears they’re handling the franchise well as it progresses without Cavill. An upcoming adult animated movie titled “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” is a new addition to Netflix’s “Witcher” universe and offers something exciting for fans to anticipate. The film unfolds between Episodes 5 and 6 of the show’s first season and is adapted from the short story “A Little Sacrifice” in Andrzej Sapkowski’s book “Sword of Destiny“.
Following a string of attacks on coastal villages, Geralt is summoned to identify and eliminate the beast causing the tragic deaths. As he strives to minimize further bloodshed, he uncovers that those who requested his help might have ulterior motives. With the possibility of a conflict between land and sea looming, Geralt works tirelessly to prevent it. Joining familiar faces like Joey Batey (Jaskier) and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer of Vengerberg), the animated film Sirens of the Deep also welcomes Doug Cockle’s voice as Geralt of Rivia. This may not resonate much with fans only of the Netflix series or books, but for enthusiasts of The Witcher video games, Cockle is a compelling reason to anticipate the upcoming animated film Sirens of the Deep.
Doug Cockle’s Return as Geralt Bodes Well for ‘The Witcher’ Franchise
Since the debut of The Witcher video game in 2007 based on Sapkowski’s novel, I, as a devoted cinema enthusiast, have been honored to voice Geralt of Rivia. I continued this role in 2011 for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and again in 2015 for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which earned me a Golden Joystick Award for Best Gaming Performance. Looking ahead, I’m thrilled to reprise the role as Geralt in the upcoming The Witcher IV game. Having portrayed this iconic character for almost two decades, my upcoming portrayal of the White Wolf in Netflix’s latest Witcher film suggests promising prospects for future adaptations of this beloved series.
Under the leadership of Cockle for the new Witcher project, it’s evident that Netflix is aiming to deliver what fans have been eagerly anticipating. By doing so, they are striving to maintain and even enhance the popularity of a highly successful franchise on their streaming service. Given the criticism surrounding Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, Netflix is keen to keep its fanbase engaged with this lucrative series. With high expectations for ‘Sirens of the Deep’, it’s strategic for Netflix to carry on producing animated adaptations of The Witcher’s tales throughout the continent.
Netflix Should Make More Animated ‘Witcher’ Adaptations
It’s clear that Netflix’s animated approach for expanding “The Witcher” universe appears to be the top choice for future projects. The 2021 animated film, titled “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf“, was warmly received by both critics and viewers alike. In contrast to the upcoming animated movie, “Nightmare of the Wolf” delves into the backstory of Vesemir (played by Theo James). It also details the attack on Kaer Morhen, an event that took place when Geralt was a child, which almost wiped out every witcher and hindered their ability to produce more witchers.
Although animation might not resonate with audiences as strongly as live-action, “Nightmare of the Wolf” still enriches the universe of “The Witcher”, making a strong case for Netflix to carry on their animated adaptations of the franchise when the series concludes after Season 5. Interestingly, spin-offs in live-action haven’t been as successful as animated versions and tend to be more expensive to produce. The release of “The Witcher: Blood Origin” in 2022 was met with broad criticism, effectively quelling fans’ expectations for future live-action spin-offs.
If the upcoming animated series, Sirens of the Deep, proves as engaging as Nightmare of the Wolf, Netflix ought to explore developing more stories set within the expansive universe of The Witcher. The intricate lore of the Continent offers a wealth of untold tales, both about its inhabitants and their history. Moreover, with Lauren Schmidt Cockrum now involved, the character of Geralt can persist without stirring up any controversy.
Note: The Witcher series and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf are available on Netflix currently. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is slated to debut on Netflix on February 11, 2025.
