As someone who grew up in the heart of Halloween-obsessed Salem, Massachusetts, and now resides in the spooky suburbs of Transylvania, I’ve seen my fair share of creepy and captivating content. When it comes to virtual Yule Logs, I’m not just looking for a simple fireplace scene; I want something extraordinary – a fusion of horror, humor, and holiday spirit.
Every holiday season, for those families like myself who don’t have a real fireplace at home, it has turned into an annual tradition to enjoy virtual Yule Logs streaming instead. There’s a vast array of these on some top-notch streaming platforms, which you can subscribe to. You might even find some enchanting options inspired by “Rick and Morty” or “Harry Potter,” accessible with a Max subscription.
In a more casual tone, I prefer my static fireplace scenes adorned with holiday decor, but with a unique pop culture spin. These specials are most likely to be played when family visits. However, among all the options, there’s one Yule Log video that stands out as my top pick – an unexpected choice, unless you have a good understanding of my preferences.
Shudder’s Mad God Ghoul Log Is The Hottest Yule Log I’ve Ever Seen
With a Shudder subscription, you’ll discover an abundance of terrifying movies streaming at your fingertips. Among these offerings, you can set up “Ghoul Logs” as virtual jack-o-lanterns for your home. The one that stands out to me is the Mad God Ghoul Log. Although designed primarily for Halloween, it manages to create a comfortable atmosphere ideal for holidays, particularly for enthusiasts of Christmas horror films. What’s unique about this Ghoul Log is the extraordinary effort poured into it, surpassing any traditional Yule Log I have ever encountered.
Drawing inspiration from the underappreciated horror film by writer and director Phil Tibbett, titled “Mad God” released in 2022 – an intriguing stop-motion animation in a post-apocalyptic future setting – this video showcases an exceptional fireplace setup. The design resembles a fearsome monster with sharp teeth and glowing red eyes, positioned beneath a large pumpkin placed on a rotating stage that occasionally spins to display different jack-o’-lantern designs, thanks to a pair of eerie stick figure carvers working behind it. The overall production design is visually stunning, evoking a majestic, subterranean dystopian atmosphere.
The Grinch Yule Log On Peacock Is My Runner Up
If you’re looking for something more festive to watch during the Christmas season, Shudder offers a “Ghoul Log” designed for the holiday, featuring a jack-o-lantern sporting a Santa hat. Personally, I prefer my second favorite Yule Log on streaming platforms, which is The Grinch Yule Log, and can be accessed with a Peacock subscription.
This 30-minute live-action Yule Log stands out among many due to its unique narrative element. It initially presents a conventional fireplace scene with festive decorations. However, these elements gradually disappear, orchestrated by the mischievous green character from one of Dr. Seuss’s beloved films. This special is suitable for children, but be aware that the initial appearance and wicked chuckle of the Grinch might startle you more than many scenes in the alternative choice, the Chucky Yule Log, which can also be found on Peacock.
Among the choices I pondered, one worth mentioning is the 2022 version of the Adult Swim Yule Log, which recently released a follow-up, Adult Swim Yule Log 2: Branchin’ Out, now streaming on Max. However, this one doesn’t quite fit because it’s actually a full-length horror-comedy film disguised as a simple fireplace video. For fans of the Star Wars saga, YouTube offers a five-hour Darth Vader Yule Log, creatively edited from the end of Return of the Jedi, by BenjaminApple. There’s a wide range of entertaining holiday Yule Logs to select, and here’s hoping for more unique ones every year.
