While attempting to prevent his snowcat from hitting his nephew, the star of Hawkeye was run over and sustained multiple fractures when he was thrown under the heavy vehicle. Since then, Renner has been candid about the incident that caused his severe snowplow injuries, and he’s been sharing details about the error that led to his harrowing ordeal. Overall, he’s not shying away from discussing the distressing event in detail.

In Jeremy Renner’s memoir, “My Next Breath,” he shares (as reported by The Sunday Times) a memory about him and his nephew, Alex. They were preparing for a week of family fun by removing snow from their neighborhood using a 14,000-pound snowcat, which Renner operated. However, before stepping out of the vehicle to chat with his nephew, it seems that Jeremy Renner may have overlooked an essential safety measure:

According to the instructions, you should always apply the parking brake before getting out of the driver’s seat. Unfortunately, on this particular occasion, I forgot to do so, and instead left the steel tracks engaged. In a split second, that seemingly insignificant oversight would set in motion a chain of events that would irrevocably alter the trajectory of my life.

Almost anyone might overlook setting the parking brake occasionally. Yet, I can empathize with Jeremy Renner’s perspective when he talks about how a seemingly small mistake can result in one of the most terrifying, life-altering experiences a person could encounter.

When the star of The Hurt Locker noticed his snowplow was veering towards Alex, he transformed into a real-life hero on the spot. Trying to leap over three feet of spinning tracks to reach the cab and halt the vehicle, the actor failed in his attempt. Fortunately, Alex managed to dodge being crushed by the snowplow, but Renner fell short as his feet slipped off the moving tracks, causing him to be hurled forward. In an unexpected turn of events, it was Renner himself who found himself underneath the snowcat: a chilling revelation that hit home for this A-list celebrity.

A deafening, grinding noise echoed as about 14,000 pounds of galvanized steel equipment relentlessly, tediously crushed down onto me. The cacophony was chilling to hear.

I can hardly conceive how it would feel for me to endure something as terrible as what Jeremy Renner experienced. As Christopher Vincent, his trainer, stated, Renner’s “intolerable” injuries were due to his brain receiving pain signals from every part of his body and being unable to suppress them.

In such a distressing situation as this one, someone might find themselves contemplating that fainting would be preferable. However, Jeremy Renner mentioned in his book that he “momentarily lost consciousness,” yet he was “aware and conscious during each instance,” feeling every ounce of discomfort throughout.

Initially, I could hear a series of loud snaps as each bone broke, it turned out there were around 38 or more of them in various conditions such as fractures, splinters, and twists. A short while later, approximately five seconds, the device seemed to move past me.

It’s still unsettling to reflect on how narrowly Renner avoided losing his life. Following the accident where he was hit by a car, he was helicoptered to a hospital where it was revealed that he had endured 38 fractures in various parts of his body and other severe injuries. It has also been reported that his “eye came out” and he had three breaks in his pelvis, six broken ribs in multiple locations, a deep cut at the back of his head, and more. Remarkably, despite these challenges, he’s managed to survive and is still among us. Today, not only has he continued to secure acting roles (and will reprise his character for Mayor of Kingstown Season 4), but he’s even released an album, titled Love and Titanium.

Life has a remarkable knack for altering in the twinkling of an eye, often as a result of decisions we make or don’t make. Despite the challenges faced by the actor from American Hustle during his accident and recovery, Renner feels fortunate for his life and the opportunity to be with his dear ones and engage in work that brings him joy.
