After numerous postponements, it’s become challenging to stay updated about when “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” will hit theaters, but its arrival is imminent. This production is slated for release in 2025, which means we’re just a few months away from witnessing more mind-boggling stunts starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie have hinted that the new film will surpass previous boundaries set by Cruise, and judging by their descriptions, it seems they might be right.
For quite some time, Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible was his sole franchise, but now, the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun has been released, delighting fans of both series. Given that Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning boasts an awe-inspiring scene featuring Tom Cruise in a plane, which director Christopher McQuarrie believes will outshine any other stunt the actor has performed on screen, it’s likely that fans will eagerly anticipate seeing this new movie. As McQuarrie shared with Empire…
In this film, there are sequences so mind-boggling they might leave you dumbfounded. On any given day in Africa, our protagonist, Tom, would accomplish a feat surpassing all his previous achievements.
Each Mission: Impossible film strives to surpass its predecessor, and the level of achievement has been exceptionally elevated. Tom Cruise has scaled skyscrapers, a feat that necessitated him to insure the company involved, and ridden motorcycles over cliffs. It’s challenging to conceive how they could outdo any of that in future installments.
In the latest Mission: Impossible movie, there’s a thrilling scene that director McQuarrie mentions, where Cruise performs an exhilarating stunt by dangling from a speeding biplane mid-flight. It’s not surprising for Cruise to perform death-defying feats from great heights, but planes have a unique ability to maneuver in ways that trains and helicopters can’t, and it seems the new movie will exploit this flexibility to its full potential.
Despite numerous safety measures in place to prevent it, Tom Cruise admitted there was an additional risk during the stunt. Specifically, at an altitude of 10,000 feet, he experienced a fainting spell due to insufficient oxygen while filming the scene. The actor himself revealed…
When protruding your head outside at speeds of around 120-130 mph, you’re not taking in any oxygen. Therefore, I needed to learn new breathing techniques. There were instances where I would faint due to lack of oxygen, making it difficult for me to regain consciousness and reenter the cockpit.
Given that Tom Cruise has performed a High-Altitude, Low Opening (HALO) jump in the past, it seems reasonable to assume that he is aware of the dangers associated with oxygen deprivation during such jumps. Naturally, during his HALO jump, he would have had specialized equipment to prevent fainting due to lack of oxygen.
This sequence could undoubtedly be the standout moment of the movie, particularly from a practical stunt perspective. However, Christopher McQuarrie hints that there might be even more breathtaking stunts to come. Therefore, it seems we’re in store for something truly extraordinary when The Final Reckoning arrives in theaters on May 23.
