There's Been A Lot Of Talk About Deadpool's Cocaine Jokes After Switching To Disney. What Really Happened

As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast who’s seen every single superhero flick under the sun and can recite dialogues from some of them like it’s my own life story, let me tell you this: The Marvel Cinematic Universe just got a whole lot more entertaining with the addition of Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s been a long time coming, and I’ve got to hand it to Disney for finally opening that door.

The Marvel Universe has expanded with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, setting a new benchmark for box office success. Long before its premiere, it was the most eagerly awaited upcoming Marvel film in quite some time, and it’s been a massive hit, introducing R-rated humor to the collective universe. There’s been quite a bit of discussion about Deadpool’s drug jokes following the move to Disney. Here’s the actual story, as told by director Shawn Levy.

Following years of isolation, Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox ultimately allowed Wade Wilson to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The franchise retained its mature rating, though adjustments were made according to studio demands. Notably, Kevin Feige expressed discomfort about Ryan Reynolds’ character continuing to use cocaine on screen. This theme was humorously addressed in Deadpool 3, and during an interview on Happy Sad Confused, Levy shared the amusing origins of that dialogue exchange. As he put it:

Initially, Kevin expressed a desire for a pure Deadpool film, suggesting minimal depiction of drug use involving Al and Wade, particularly cocaine. Agreeing wholeheartedly, we promptly penned a joke about Feige’s request for no cocaine upon our return home. This joke was among the very first we wrote for the script.

Without much ado, one of the top candidates for Deadpool 3 emerged, in true Ryan Reynolds style, with Shawn Levy casually breaching the fourth wall about their Marvel involvement and working under Kevin Feige. It remains to be seen if the MCU mastermind will establish any guidelines regarding the Merc with a Mouth’s dialogue; there’s a chance they might become part of his famous banter instead.

As Deadpool and Wolverine’s run time unfolded, I, being Wade Wilson, found myself completely cocaine-free – much to the disappointment of my roommate Blind Al, portrayed by Leslie Uggams. She persistently urged me to join in on the fun, even going so far as to rattle off every creative name she could think of for the substance. However, despite all the wild references suggesting we’d been doing lines, the truth was, we didn’t actually partake. But boy, was it a rollercoaster ride of innuendo!

Though some spectators were apprehensive about the Deadpool series integrating into the MCU, the eccentric spirit of the franchise remained intact in the third installment. Known for its excessive violence and abundance of F-bombs, the credits of Deadpool and Wolverine also paid a touching homage to 20th Century Fox. Moreover, fans were thrilled by numerous appearances from past films, such as Channing Tatum’s Gambit, Dafne Keen’s X-23, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra.
