’There’s No Comparison’: Eddie Murphy Reveals The Film He Thinks Has His Best Performance, And It May Not Be The One You’d Expect

As a huge fan of Eddie Murphy‘s illustrious career, I have always been in awe of his versatility as an actor. From his hilarious performances in “Beverly Hills Cop” to his heartfelt portrayal of James “Thunder” Early in “Dreamgirls,” it’s clear that Murphy has left an indelible mark on Hollywood.

Eddie Murphy has given several remarkable acting performances throughout the span of his successful career. He brought to life the humorous and brave Axel Foley in the “Beverly Hills Cop” series, and the talented yet troubled James “Thunder” Early in “Dreamgirls,” among other roles. When asked about his favorite performance during an interview, Murphy replied with a surprising answer: he considers them all “incomparable.” It’s worth mentioning that the movie that comes to mind when thinking of Eddie Murphy’s best work might not be what you’d initially guess.

In an extensive conversation with the hosts of The New York Times podcast, “The Interview” (available on YouTube), the 63-year-old actor reflected on his professional journey and personal experiences. During this chat, one host praised Eddie Murphy’s performance in the film “Bowfinger.” However, Murphy humbly expressed a different opinion, stating that his finest work can be seen in a 1996 comedy where he portrayed a charming scientist.

In my opinion, neither comparison does justice to my preference, but I lean towards “Bowfinger” due to a personal connection. Having had the privilege of portraying a mother in that production, I can attest to the authenticity of the experience. The transformative makeups by Rick Baker were nothing short of extraordinary, erasing all traces of me and allowing me to become another character entirely. I could enter a room unrecognized, making it my most rewarding acting experience yet.

As a gamer, I’d say: In “The Nutty Professor,” a modern take on Jerry Lewis’ classic sci-fi comedy, I step into the shoes of Eddie Murphy as Sherman Klump – an overweight scientist with a burning desire to lose weight. Through rigorous experimentation, I manage to concoct a miraculous elixir that helps me shed those extra pounds. However, things take an unexpected turn when this potion inadvertently gives birth to my mischievous alter ego, Buddy Love. What sets “The Nutty Professor” apart from other films, as I expressed during the interview, is the fact that I single-handedly portrayed almost every member of the Klump family through intricate makeup techniques.

Based on my personal experiences and the films I’ve seen, I strongly believe that while I enjoyed Bowfinger, there were at least 20 other actors who could have delivered a compelling performance in that role. However, when it comes to The Nutty Professor, no other actor comes close to Eddie Murphy for me. His unique charm and versatility brought the character to life in an unforgettable way.

Bowfinger is indeed one of Eddie Murphy’s best movies – and for good reason. In the 1999 satirical flick centered around Hollywood, Murphy excellently plays dual roles. However, while speaking with the NYT, he made a good argument in that there are probably other stars who could’ve played the roles of siblings Kit and Jiff Ramsey. And, on the other side of that equation, I’m honestly not sure who could’ve played the Klumps like he did.

Today, “The Nutty Professor” continues to be one of Eddie Murphy’s most renowned films, and when it debuted approximately 30 years ago, it was a box office sensation. The film’s success likely paved the way for the creation of its sequel, titled “The Klumps” in 2000. Although the sequel didn’t receive the same critical acclaim as its predecessor, it was still financially successful. The movie and the character of Sherman Klump continue to hold a dear place in the hearts of some fans. In fact, Lizzo shared that she had an emotional response to Sherman’s storyline. Surprisingly, Murphy disclosed that he had originally intended for the Klumps to make an appearance in “Coming 2 America” in 2021. This shows just how deeply connected Murphy is to this unforgettable family.

No matter which movie you believe features Murphy’s superior performance, I encourage fans to acknowledge the unique qualities of both. These films are more than just excellent examples of comedy filmmaking; they also highlight Murphy’s versatility and skill as an actor.

With a Netflix subscription, not only can you watch “The Nutty Professor” right now, but you’ll also have the opportunity to view Eddie Murphy’s newest release, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” Additionally, a Starz subscription grants access to the critically acclaimed and often overlooked film, “Bowfinger.”
