As a long-time fan of Hot Ones and a connoisseur of spicy food, I can’t help but admire Sean Evans’ unparalleled ability to bring celebrities together for a fiery chat over wings. The show has become an integral part of pop culture, with its influence extending even to SNL and Netflix.
Hot Ones isn’t for the weak-stomached, referring to individuals who can’t tolerate spicy food. This First We Feast-produced series has been a cultural phenomenon for almost a decade, with numerous celebrities appearing on it. The show and its host, Sean Evans, have become so interwoven into pop culture that they’ve been referenced and parodied in various ways, such as the popular Netflix movie and TV show A Family Affair and SNL. Interestingly, Maya Rudolph has only pretended to be on the show, and there’s a humorous backstory to why this is the case.
During my recent chat with the rising star of Saturday Night Live, Bowen Yang, over at Hot Ones, we got talking about dream guests for the show. This conversation led us to reminisce about the hilarious Beyoncé-themed sketches featuring Maya Rudolph on Hot Ones. Intriguingly, Sean Evans shared that he had asked Rudolph herself if she’d be a guest on the actual show while filming an episode for her show Loot! He elaborated on how she reacted to this idea:
When I invited her to appear on Loot after her repeated Hot Ones appearances, she responded by saying, “Sean, I’d be happy to chat with you about anything, but there’s no chance in the world I’ll ever eat those wings!” That’s what she told me.
More on Maya Rudolph
In a candid conversation, Maya Rudolph discusses her decision to rejoin Saturday Night Live to portray Vice President Kamala Harris. Apparently, the world felt she would take on the role before she herself agreed to it.
It’s a great retelling, and I’m glad he confirmed that we should not expect a Maya Rudolph episode in his series. Also, kudos to the chicken wing talk show host for effectively pronouncing that F-bomb as the Bridesmaids star would have. Some may be disappointed that Rudolph doesn’t want to be on the show, but I don’t blame her.
In a refreshing twist, Hot Ones, despite its immense popularity, places celebrities in a particular spotlight that not all handle gracefully. Occasionally, individuals like Conan O’Brien step up to the challenge of consuming numerous hot wings and enduring the aftermath, making for an entertaining spectacle (for viewers). It’s perfectly reasonable if Rudolph chooses to avoid such a messy situation. Meanwhile, I eagerly await her future appearances on SNL and other programs. Furthermore, I can’t help but ponder when we might get another season of Loot.
What continues to amaze me is how the Grown Ups cast member has somehow capitalized on the popular hot wing trend without physically experiencing the pain. Moreover, her portrayal of Beyoncé offers an ideal blend of worlds. This is remarkable because it’s hard to imagine anyone more unlikely to emulate Queen Bey (though it would be fascinating if she did). However, for those who wish the actress might reconsider, remember the thoughts she expressed during her conversation with Sean Evans.
If you fancy watching “Hot Ones”, head on over to YouTube. You can also stream Maya Rudolph’s performances in the series “Loot” with an Apple TV+ subscription, while a Peacock subscription will give you access to her work on “Saturday Night Live”.
