There's Some Horrifying Trolling Going On After The Acolyte's Cancellation: ‘Stay Away’

As a seasoned gamer and Star Wars enthusiast with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of disillusionment upon hearing the news about The Acolyte’s untimely cancellation. I’ve weathered countless storms in the galaxy far, far away, from the prequels to the sequels, and even the animated shows. Yet, nothing quite compares to the disappointment that comes with seeing a promising series being axed before its time.

As a devoted Star Wars enthusiast, I was deeply saddened to learn this week that Lucasfilm has decided to cancel “The Acolyte” after just one season. The announcement sparked an outpouring of disappointment from fans like me across the web. What’s interesting is that not only supporters of the show are voicing their opinions, but also those who weren’t fond of it. Unsurprisingly, they haven’t held back on expressing their thoughts, leading to a wave of intense criticism – or what I’d call some brutal trolling – aimed at the now-canceled science fiction series.

  • Your character sucks. Stay away from Star Wars please – @stationofsevastopol
  • Finally this hell is over. – @bgan.bng
  • Congratulations on the cancelation of this TERRIBLE THING. Now I hope you do something of value without identy politics. GET WOKE GO BROKE, BABY!! 🔥 – @pabloarcadia
  • Thank god this show is cancelled 😂 – @coop__nyc

During and before the premiere of the spin-off series of “Star Wars”, some users criticized it heavily on Rotten Tomatoes, a practice known as review-bombing. Many of these commenters disliked the show for being perceived as “woke”. As a result, the series now has an audience rating of 18% on RT, which is significantly lower than its 78% score from critics.

During the series, Amandla Stenberg faced criticism on multiple occasions, one of which occurred in June when a video from an old interview resurfaced. Critics of Acolyte had shared this clip, claiming that it showed Stenberg wanting to make white people cry. However, this was not accurate as her statement was taken out of context. In reality, the comments made during her 2018 appearance on The Daily Show were about a goal for the movie The Hate U Give, which tackled police brutality. When host Trevor Noah asked Stenberg – who was promoting The Hate U Give – what she hoped people would take away from the film, she responded, “White people crying actually was the goal.”

Even though there were review-bombing efforts, the since-canceled Lucasfilm production did amass a solid fanbase during its run. From that fandom, sprang the #RenewTheAcolyte trend. That positivity seems to still be intact since the show received the ax. Fans also took to Amandla Stenberg’s Instagram post to express kind thoughts. Some also went to IG to share similar sentiments under a post of Stenberg’s co-star, Manny Jacinto (who went viral as the show aired and was dubbed the new Kylo Ren):

  • I think you were awesome in the Acolyte! I’m sorry it got cancelled. I looked it and a big part of that was you. Hang in there and don’t listen to the haters. – @phenson65
  • You’re so amazing in the show Amandla, you should be so proud 🥹💕 – @hellajerica
  • Y’all deserved better. Hope wtv y’all work on in the future is more appreciated than what Star Wars fan ever gave you. – @hidoradoraa
  • So crushed. So many of want to see the next chapter! Y’all absolutely killed it, keep that head up high! – @samdoesntsmile

Despite the persistent optimism, there’s a noticeable sense of disappointment among fans that the show created by Leslye Headland has been cancelled. Since then, some have suggested that the loyalty of Star Wars fans towards the brand might be waning, and Lucasfilm should take heed. What seems to disheartened many dedicated viewers is the idea that storylines may not be concluded. This includes the alliance between characters Osha and Qimir, as well as Yoda’s appearance during the finale. Whether these plot threads will be resolved in future episodes remains uncertain. In the interim, it seems likely that fans will keep expressing their dissatisfaction with the series while others advocate for its return.

Feel free to explore the entire series of “The Acolyte” by streaming it through a Disney+ membership. Right now, you can also gather information about forthcoming Star Wars television programs and films.
