As a dedicated fan of Chicago Med since its inception, I must say that the tenth season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The departure of long-time showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider was bittersweet, but the arrival of Allen MacDonald and Anna Decosa has breathed new life into this beloved medical drama.
In a fresh start, Chicago Med embarked on a new phase with its tenth season slated for 2024 television programming. Previously leading showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider have moved on, making way for Allen MacDonald to assume the reins of One Chicago’s medical series. Ahead of Season 10, MacDonald shared his plans with TopMob. As we approach the winter finale, I recently spoke with leading actor Steven Weber about the changes ahead, and he was candid in his response.
As a dedicated gamer, I had the chance to quiz Steven Weber about the latest twists in the series, and let me tell you, it’s been quite a ride for Dr. Archer this season. It all started with the news that he’d be sharing ED Chief duties with Dr. Lenox, and most recently, he was demoted to attending. If you haven’t caught up yet, you can stream the first part on Peacock.
Andy and Diane transformed this series into a stunning, exhilarating, emotional universe – they created Chicago Med and established Gaffney. They were generous in passing the responsibility to Allen McDonald and producer Anna Decosa. Now, they’ve taken the lead and are running with it. Pardon the metaphor, but that’s exactly what they’re doing. They’ve chosen to refine what was already exceptional and delve even further, taking this show beyond its depths on numerous occasions. Chicago Med is now a daily immersion into its gritty reality. Indeed, it’s getting raw.
Among the trio of “One Chicago” series, it was only “Med” that retained its original showrunners at the conclusion of the 2023-2024 TV season. Previously, Andrea Newman from “Fire” and Gwen Sigan from “P.D.” served as producers before stepping up as showrunners. With Andy Schneider and Diane Frolov’s departures, “Med” is venturing into fresh, rougher territories. Interestingly, all the current “One Chicago” showrunners maintain a group text message thread, which could prove useful for the reported upcoming three-show crossover event. Weber added:
We’re seeing more personal stories. We’re seeing more stories of the people who’ve always been there, like the nurses, and that’s really fantastic. And I think it’s smart, because the audience is smart. They like their comfort food. Believe me, I’m one of them, but if you raise the bar, they will come. Allen and Anna are raising the bar, and the audience is coming there, as evidenced by our ratings. People are really digging the show and coming to it and looking forward to it, not just as comfort, but they’re excited by it. That’s a function of our new writers.
In Season 10, Archer’s tales have taken on a harsher tone, covering aspects such as his bond with his son and the challenges at work with Lenox. These difficulties reached their peak when he essentially forced Goodwin to choose between him and Lenox for the ED Chief position, but didn’t receive the desired response. In the sneak peek for the winter finale, it appears that he confides in Hannah about writing a resignation letter.
Of course, Archer writing a resignation letter is far from a guarantee that he’ll be resigning from the hospital by the time the final credits roll. If anything, the preview that he’ll be talking to Hannah about it is a good sign. Not only do they have a history of helping each other through tough times, but Allen MacDonald proved to be a fan of their dynamic, with the showrunner telling TopMob earlier this year that Hannah and Archer are “the ones that each goes to the other in moments of emotional need or when they need to talk something out.”
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming fall finale of “Chicago Med” on NBC, airing on Wednesday, November 20 at 8 p.m. ET, promises a rollercoaster of events. One of the most exciting developments is the long-awaited return of Sarah Reese since early Season 4 in 2018! Additionally, we’ll finally get to unravel the mystery behind the plot against Goodwin. Don’t miss it! And if you want to catch up on this season or revisit the entire series, head over to Peacock and stream your favorite episodes.
Every Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, you’ll find ‘Med’ preceded by ‘Chicago Fire’ and its regular actors, while ‘P.D.’ airs a tense fall finale at 10 p.m. ET, both on NBC and available for streaming the next day.
