In the fourth episode of NCIS Season 19, which is available for streaming with a Paramount+ subscription, Mark Harmon’s character Leroy Jethro Gibbs bid farewell to Timothy McGee, portrayed by Sean Murray, after a fishing trip in Naktok Bay, Alaska. This encounter occurred over three years since Harmon last appeared on the main NCIS show. Interestingly, Gary Cole, who plays Alden Parker in the current NCIS cast and made his debut just a couple of episodes prior, shared that Harmon’s final scene turned out to be more impactful than anticipated during filming.
Cole recently dropped by the podcast “Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch,” where he conversed with former NCIS stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo. Interestingly, they had both left NCIS before Cole joined the team, and will reappear as Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David in the upcoming spinoff titled “NCIS: Tony & Ziva.” During their chat, Cole discussed how Mark Harmon’s departure from NCIS strategically paved the way for the introduction of Alden Parker. While discussing this, Cole also mentioned an unanticipated incident – surprisingly pleasant weather during filming in Alaska.
After they filmed their final scene, they left Mark stranded in the water with a seaplane passing by in the background. Not everyone was present during that shoot; it was just a small team compared to our usual crew. They were also fortunate because they managed to keep open a fishing lodge that usually closes down on Labor Day for winter, extending it by 10 days specifically for this production. We shot for only three days, but we had to act quickly due to the short timeframe. Remarkably, during those three days, the weather was exceptionally clear with bright sunshine, which is not typical at that time of year as the landscape would usually be covered in fog and dampness. They truly got lucky with such ideal shooting conditions.

Mark Harmon Just Admitted The Original Version Of NCIS Was Nothing Like The Show Fans Actually Got
As a dedicated NCIS fan, I couldn’t help but notice that the promotional campaign for one of Tony’s finest episodes fell flat. But fear not, fellow enthusiasts! The NCIS team saw this as an opportunity and took it upon themselves to step up the game in advertising. They didn’t miss the mark this time; instead, they hit it out of the park with their creative and engaging promotional strategies for that unforgettable episode.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate the serendipity that unfolded during the “Great Wide Open” episode of NCIS. Had the Alaskan weather not cooperated and given us just an hour of good weather, I’m sure the talented team behind the scenes would have found a way to make the Gibbs and McGee scene work. But luck was on their side that week, as they were graced with three days of sunshine instead. This allowed Mark Harmon and Sean Murray to be beautifully illuminated as the episode reached its climax.
After solving the case, Gibbs surprised us all by deciding to stay in the Alaskan wilderness. As his plane took off, McGee managed a final glance at his mentor, who was still fishing peacefully by the lake. It’s moments like these that make NCIS truly stand out.
Despite speculation that Mark Harmon won’t be reappearing on NCIS in the near future, if at all, he continues to contribute to the franchise by serving as an executive producer and narrator for NCIS: Origins. In front of the camera, Austin Stowell portrays a younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Meanwhile, Gary Cole and Sean Murray maintain their regular roles on NCIS, joined by Wilmer Valderrama, Katrina Law, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, and Rocky Carroll. As of now, there’s no definite information about whether either show will air during the 2025-2026 television seasons, but the likelihood of NCIS: Origins getting a Season 23 renewal appears high.
On Monday, January 27, 2025, both NCIS and NCIS: Origins will return to TV screens. Following this, on Friday, January 31, the second season of NCIS: Sydney will air. In August 8, 2025, Mark Harmon will appear in Freakier Friday, which will be released in movie theaters.
