What makes Meaney even more admirable is his graceful approach to the sometimes contentious fandom, recently defending Trekkies against undeserved criticism from outsiders.
Meaney recently spoke to ComicBookMovie about his history with the iconic franchise, and just to get it out of the way now, he still hasn’t changed his stance about not appearing in any upcoming Star Trek projects. So that’s out of the picture. But when asked about the legacy of the franchise and dealing with Trekkies, the actor seemed to go on the defensive in discussing the largely pleasant exchanges he’s had with fans:
I didn’t initially agree with the notion that Star Trek fans are all eccentric, but there are a few who might fit that description. However, most of them have always come off as dedicated enthusiasts to me. They’re friendly, open about their thoughts, and then they respect personal space – which is a rare quality nowadays. I must admit, they’ve always impressed me with their in-depth knowledge, far exceeding what I knew when I was involved.
Given today’s streaming services like Paramount+ make it easy for “Star Trek” fans to binge-watch the entire TV series, it’s not surprising that viewers are usually more knowledgeable about the show’s lore than the actors themselves. After all, if an actor like Colm Meaney is occupied with other projects and has no desire to rejoin the franchise, why would he be spending time watching his old episodes?
Meaney consistently complimented the fans for their profound understanding of both “Deep Space Nine” and “The Next Generation”, and he mentioned that this depth of knowledge offered an additional advantage. Instead of fixating on the puzzling instances of “TNG”, it appears they’re all taking away a more profound meaning from these series.

So, his opinion might not accurately reflect the series’ success. Instead, I agree more with Colm Meaney’s analysis.

It’s unfortunate that he seems uninterested in reprising his role as Miles O’Brien, given Ronald D. Moore’s recent interest in reviving the franchise as reported by TopMob. It would be disappointing if Deep Space Nine’s sequel didn’t feature Miles prominently, considering his significant contributions to the show, such as the episode where he was forced to dress as a Klingon and detested it.
There’s a bright side to this situation: Actors like Colm Meaney can always reconsider their decisions, and it might be that he hasn’t been approached for a role in the new Star Trek. If he receives an offer and finds the script appealing, I wouldn’t rule out him thinking about it. In fact, it could even be a possibility to please fans who long for Miles O’Brien’s return. However, I must admit that I could be mistaken. But considering how many original cast members have come back, I don’t find it unreasonable to believe he might join the team again.
