Things Are Looking Really, REALLY Bad For Kraven The Hunter

Things Are Looking Really, REALLY Bad For Kraven The Hunter

As a seasoned gamer and avid moviegoer who has seen his fair share of superhero films, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu when it comes to Sony’s upcoming release, “Kraven the Hunter.” With box office predictions pointing towards another flop for the Spider-Man Universe (SSU), I find myself bracing for yet another letdown.

Is it likely that Sony’s debut R-rated superhero movie, “Kraven the Hunter,” may shatter records, but unfortunately not in a positive manner? As the premiere date approaches, industry forecasts are painting a grim picture for its opening weekend earnings — and this is no exaggeration. In fact, estimates suggest that the film could only manage to earn around $20-25 million during its first three days in cinemas.

Remember, the earnings of “Kraven” might not reach the heights of “Morbius,” which grossed approximately $39 million during its U.S. opening weekend. It’s also expected to fall short of “Madame Web,” a film that earned around $26 million. If these predictions hold true, “Kraven” could potentially rank among the lower-grossing Marvel or Marvel-related films in cinematic history.

Currently, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) hasn’t quite matched up to the impressive stature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The initial Venom movies were passable at best, but they didn’t earn significant profits or garner outstanding reviews. Morbius managed to stay afloat in theaters, yet it served as an easy target for jokes following Jared Leto’s less than stellar performance as the Joker. Madame Web, on the other hand, was so puzzling that it required viewing to fully appreciate its oddity.

Why is the outlook so poor for Kraven?

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder why the outlook for “Kraven” seems so dismal, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson donning the title role. Reflecting on the past films within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, it appears that they haven’t exactly left audiences spellbound up until now. So, could we really anticipate a dramatic turnaround in quality? That remains to be seen.

In a similar vein to previous Sony productions, it seems “Kraven” is adopting a narrative structure where the antagonist serves as the main character, albeit with certain aspects of his backstory and personality modified. Interestingly, it’s suggested that Peter Parker (Spidey) won’t be present in this story, despite hints of Kraven engaging in combat with some variation of Spider-Man.

Despite these approaches not proving successful in past movies, it seems we’re stuck with them again. Frankly, audiences are tired of such disappointments, and they’ve grown wise to predicting such letdowns long before they experience them.

Everyone could be wrong about Kraven

Could it be that “Kraven the Hunter,” as portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, could surprise us and guide Sony towards a more successful path? Here’s why I think so: Aaron Taylor-Johnson seems like a perfect fit for the lead role. Much like Tom Hardy was the standout in the Venom movies, Johnson could be the key to making this film cohesive and engaging.

One advantage for the film “Kraven” when it comes to box office performance is that there isn’t much competition in theaters, with only “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” an animated movie that hasn’t received much hype, set to release around the same time. With no other major live-action films vying for attention, it’s quite likely that “Kraven” will exceed expectations, especially since audiences might not have many other options at that time.

Ultimately, these forecasts are all we have until the movie’s debut on December 13th. We can only then judge how “Kraven” measures against its somewhat underwhelming predecessors.
