This fan theory suggests that Skeen’s betrayal of the Rebel alliance in “Andor” may not have been a premeditated act, but rather a reaction to the death of his friend and mentor, Karis Nemik. The theory posits that Nemik, who was a gifted writer and passionate rebel, could have had a greater impact on inspiring rebellion among the people of Ferrix if he hadn’t been killed. The theory also speculates that Cassian Andor, who was present during Nemik’s death, may not have become the man we see in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” without his influence. The theory ends by mentioning that the actor who plays Ruescott Melshi, another prisoner with whom Cassian had a connection, is confirmed to return for season 2 of “Andor,” which is currently facing production delays due to the actors’ and writers’ strikes in 2023.
As a dedicated gamer, I can tell you that in Disney+’s Andor, Karis Nemik, brilliantly portrayed by Alex Lawther, stood out as the tech-savvy and compassionate member of the Aldhani heist squad. Sadly, Nemik’s life was cut short during their hasty escape. Despite his untimely demise, he became a beloved character in the franchise for several reasons.
In the world of “Star Wars,” the franchise has been unafraid to eliminate beloved characters, even literally. The upcoming series “Andor” is set before the events of “Rogue One,” a film notorious for claiming the lives of its major characters, including Cassian. However, every decision to terminate a character comes with its own expense, particularly when that character holds significant importance in the larger narrative. In this piece, we will delve into Nemik’s role, the reasons behind his popularity among fans, and whether “Star Wars” writers missed an opportunity by not allowing him to contribute more.
What Karis Nemik Embodied in Andor
The Aldhani heist was a daring plan to make off with over 80 million credits, which equates to the entire sector’s payroll. This elaborate scheme was masterminded by Luthen and skillfully executed by Vel, but every team member contributed essential pieces to the puzzle. Lieutenant Gorn served as the mole, supplying them with valuable information about the base’s inner workings and eventual entry point. Taramyn, with his Stormtrooper background, led the group in stealthy advancement and ensured they went unnoticed. Nemik completed the team by imparting knowledge on outdated technology that wouldn’t raise suspicion and devising strategies for successful navigation.
although he was known as the intelligent member of the team, his true role extended far beyond that label. He advocated and embodied a strong moral compass, standing by his teammates through thick and thin. His unwavering faith in their mission and in Cassian never faltered. Consequently, with him absent, individuals like Skeen have reverted to pursuing their own selfish agendas. The transformation is so stark that some spectators suspect Skeen’s supposed betrayal was not premeditated as he had claimed.
Nemik’s Death Incited Skeen’s Betrayal: A Fan Theory
As a dedicated fan of the story, I can understand how easily Skeen’s assertion that he was always planning on leaving may seem plausible given his admission to Cassian about fabricating a deceased brother. However, upon closer examination, this claim appears less convincing.
Additionally, it’s clear that Skeen held a deep affection for Nemik. A conversation between them eloquently illustrates their connection.

The Potential That Was Lost With Nemik in Andor
In “Andor” Season 2, there are several noteworthy characters from the first season that we hope will return. It’s likely that some of them might make an appearance. However, let’s ponder over how different the Season 1 finale could have been if Nemik had survived instead of Maarva. If it was Nemik who instigated the chaos on Ferrix rather than Maarva, the outcome may have been drastically different. While using Maarva’s funeral hologram was an effective choice, it wasn’t immediately clear how influential Maarva was in their society until that moment. Her words held significant power, which was a bit unexpected. In contrast, Nemik was known for his eloquence and was a symbol of the Rebellion. He had penned a manifesto. Had he been hiding with Vel and Cinta on Ferrix, he could have disseminated the manifesto. The scene of his death, with him being squashed under the weight of the capital, could have remained unchanged but merely delayed for maximum impact.
Cassian still has a significant transformation ahead of him before he reaches the point we see him in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” It’s challenging to picture Luthen, the man last seen with him, being the driving force behind this change. However, there is potential for growth in Cassian’s relationship with Ruescott Melshi. Although they parted ways after escaping together from Niamos, their friendship could develop further. With the actor confirmed to return for “Andor” season 2, we will most likely witness their bond form. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to see it until next year due to delays caused by the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes in the Star Wars series. “Andor” is currently streaming on Disney+.
