Time-travel narratives can become complex swiftly, yet this 2013 original production by SYFY hit upon an ideal theme and carried out its delivery flawlessly from beginning to end.
The four-season sci-fi series “Continuum,” which aired from 2013 to 2015, focuses on character Kiera Cameron, a police officer from 2077 portrayed by Rachel Nichols. An audacious escape from the future leads to her being hurled through time, ending up in the modern era — accompanied by a group of terrorists who had ventured back to the past with the aim of altering their future before it transpires.
This idea becomes more complex as you delve deeper into it, but the presentation is graceful and straightforward. If you enjoy series such as 12 Monkeys, Timeless, and Travelers, this fits perfectly within that genre. Plus, all four seasons are currently available to stream on Peacock.

Remembering Continuum, SYFY’s underrated time-travel series

When Kiera arrives in our current time from her past, she connects with a young technological prodigy who will eventually become a significant figure in a future ruled by corporations instead of governments. In this corporation-dominated future, terrorists known as Liber8 are attempting to thwart its realization. The series doesn’t shy away from exploring the complexities of determining who is right or wrong in this situation. Is it necessary to alter the course of history, even if different tactics are employed, and is this a noble cause?
As time progresses and secrets are revealed, Kiera forms alliances with modern-day law enforcement and encounters members of the Liber8 group. They discover that on occasions, their goals may coincide. Eventually, they come to understand that Kiera’s return to the present might not have been an unintended occurrence.
Remarkably skillful for a production within cable budget constraints, it cleverly employs visual effects when necessary, giving the impression that it was filmed with double the allocated funds. Despite being over a decade old, it maintains its relevance surprisingly well, and some of its topics feel more relevant today than during its original broadcast.
Continuum is a perfect sci-fi binge
Despite running for four consecutive seasons, the entire series spans only 42 episodes, keeping it from becoming overly lengthy and making it highly suitable for binge-watching. Additionally, the creative minds behind the show (Simon Barry being the creator) were aware of its conclusion and skillfully designed an ending that neatly wrapped up the series as a whole.
So, you can safely go into this binge knowing you’ll have a complete story.
In terms of the characters, Nichols is joined by a group who will likely be recognizable to science fiction (and SYFY) enthusiasts. The series was filmed in Canada and showcases numerous actors who frequently appear in genre shows produced there during that time. Victor Webster, known for Mutant X, portrays Kiera’s police partner; Stephen Lobo, from Painkiller Jane, is a fellow time traveler and occasional ally; Roger Cross (Dark Matter) and Lexa Doig (Stargate SG-1) are members of Liber8; Tony Amendola (Stargate SG-1) leads Liber8; Jennifer Spence, from Stargate Universe, is a researcher for the local police. There are also many more familiar faces in the guest star cast, with actors from Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, and X-Files making regular appearances.
