As a lifelong fan of J.R.R Tolkien’s Middle-earth, I find myself torn between my love for the source material and my growing appreciation for the Prime Video series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Galadriel has always been one of my favorite characters, a powerful, complex woman who embodies strength and wisdom. However, the portrayal of her character in the show seems to be causing quite a stir among fans like myself.
In the recently premiered second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” there’s a debate among viewers, both fans of the show and followers of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, about a specific plot point. Some argue that the romantic undertones between Galadriel and Sauron, often referred to as “Saurondriel” by fans, seems to deviate from the established lore and may need to evolve substantially as the story unfolds and aligns with the original trilogy.
The television series is an adaptation of Tolkien’s tale set around the Second Age of Middle-earth. However, Prime Video doesn’t have the rights to a page-to-screen adaptation of the source material about the Second Age. With this in mind, Amazon has to take creative liberties to fill in the gaps between storylines involving characters from the original material. The showrunners were bound to receive backlash because book-to-screen adaptations come with challenges, and they run the risk of creating divisive discourse among fans. The connection between Galadriel and Sauron needs to change from the romantic underlying theme to explain the dichotomy of the characters and why that’s the reason for their connection.

In the TV series “The Rings of Power,” as it adapts Tolkien’s appendices from “The Lord of the Rings,” several elements have been altered. Since its premiere in 2022, many viewers have expressed disappointment with the portrayal of Galadriel’s character, particularly her relationship with Sauron. Morally, these two characters occupy diametrically opposed positions. Galadriel is known for her immense power and wisdom among Elves, embodying hope, knowledge, and a resistance to Sauron’s darkness. Sauron, on the other hand, represents the epitome of evil, manifesting as corruption itself.
In the TV show, the storyline deviates from J.R.R. Tolkien’s books by portraying interactions between Sauron and Galadriel, which are not suggested in the novels. Introducing a potential romantic subtext to their relationship in the series is a departure from Tolkien’s original vision for these characters.
Galadriel’s and Sauron’s Character Arcs in Rings of Power
In the original Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, Galadriel is portrayed as the Queen during the Third Age. By this stage in the storyline, viewers understand her narrative to be one of wisdom and salvation. She stands firm against darkness, and the makers of the Prime Video series must depict her journey towards this stance. It’s not essential for Galadriel and Sauron to share a romantic connection for her to resist his power; rather, the showrunners can delve into the psychological conflict that exists between these two characters.
In a different phrasing: The essence of Sauron lies in his capacity for deceit and control. Adding the possibility of a romantic relationship with Galadriel might contradict the purpose of the character, who serves as an embodiment of evil. Maintaining Sauron’s villainous role as a legendary figure is crucial to fans of the books because it preserves the mythical aspect of the story. By keeping Sauron detached from people, he can inspire fear, but introducing a personal connection, even if manipulative, could lead to disapproval among some viewers.
Discourse Between Fans of the Lord of the Rings Series and Books
Supporters of the initial content find it hard to reconcile with the storyline presented in the series by the showrunners. The portrayal of Galadriel, who possesses her own autonomy, seems diminished when paired with a romantic interest, according to some fans. On Reddit, this topic has sparked quite a lively discussion.

Frankly, it feels like the show missed an opportunity in this regard.
As a die-hard fan of Middle Earth, I can’t help but feel the immense pressure on the creators as they delve into the intricate tapestry of relationships in Season 2, particularly between Galadriel and Sauron. This evolving dynamic might just widen the gap between casual viewers and purists who know Tolkien’s works inside out.
