Warning – This article contains spoilers for Marvel’s Thunderbolts*.
It appears that some astute viewers have noticed that elements from Bucky Barnes’ (Sebastian Stan) trauma room could have been subtly included in the film Thunderbolts. During the climax, it’s necessary for the team to delve into The Void/Sentry’s (Lewis Pullman) mindscape, which compels the heroes to confront their deepest fears. Much of this sequence focuses on Bob and Yelena’s (Florence Pugh) individual experiences, but a clever easter egg might hint at Bucky’s room as well.
A Twitter user noticed an interesting detail when Bucky bursts through a wall to enter Bob’s trauma room in the show. For a moment, you can see what was inside the room he left behind. This scene appears to share similarities with the HYDRA facility from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, particularly the dim lighting and metal railings that are distinctively noticeable.
The Thunderbolts team members had to enter Bob’s healing chamber through their own exit, suggesting strongly that wherever Bucky is leaving from is probably one of his secret hiding places or memory chambers. Given the HYDRA facility’s history of captivity, torture, and mind control that led to Bucky becoming the Winter Soldier, it seems plausible that this location could serve as a symbolic or literal room for Bucky.
Initially, Director Jake Schreier intended to delve into each character’s past traumas, envisioning the ending as a collective release from their personal “shame closets.” However, these plans were scaled back to primarily focus on Bob’s character.
Indeed, we had an attempt at it. The climax, for me, transformed into a thrilling exploration through their personal ‘shame chambers.’ It seemed quite engaging and enjoyable. However, what truly resonated with Joanna [Calo] was the necessity of confronting a formidable adversary before leaving the Void. Given that this could pave the way to the core of the Void, I felt it was crucial to delve into Bob’s ‘shame chambers,’ even though I am deeply saddened that we didn’t get to uncover each character’s backstory.
Currently playing in theaters, “Thunderbolts” features Stan portraying Bucky alongside Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, and Wyatt Russell. This film marks the conclusion of Phase 5 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Will Thunderbolts Ever Reveal the Other Characters’ Trauma Rooms?
Although the trauma rooms belonging to Bucky and other Thunderbolts team members didn’t make it into the final scenes of the movie, Schreier shared with Variety some concepts they had developed for these individual spaces.
The director divulged that they had numerous unique concepts for Bucky’s rooms, but aimed to create something that was more unexpected than the typical idea. This unconventional approach resulted in a storyline involving a humiliating incident in Bucky’s Boy Scout days, which ultimately didn’t make it into the final script.
We’ve had numerous variations of Bucky. We often found ourselves veering slightly away from our initial concept. While there are certain obvious directions for Bucky, I believe at one point Joanna might have penned a scene revolving around an embarrassing incident at Boy Scout camp. However, I’m not sure that would have been the most fitting choice.
Schreier mentioned that they progressed significantly in creating the sequence featuring extra ‘shame rooms’, and had even prepared animatics and storyboards. Since these scenes apparently weren’t shot for other characters, using the “typical concept” (the HYDRA facility) for a brief look at Bucky’s trauma room in the final version seems logical, as it was likely an efficient way to hint at his past.
The team successfully assisted Bob in overcoming his past traumas, leading to The Void temporarily being suppressed at present. However, with Pullman and his comrades, the Thunderbolts (now known by another name), set for a role in Avengers: Doomsday, there’s a possibility that the trauma therapy sessions could be revisited again in future events.
