The action-packed team-up movie from Marvel, titled “Thunderbolts“, debuted in London on April 22. Simultaneously, select cities across the USA held preliminary screenings at IMAX theaters on the same day. Critics’ reviews are still under wraps until April 29 at noon ET, as the film is set to hit theatres on May 2. However, social media restrictions have been lifted ahead of schedule for this project, unlike most recent Marvel Cinematic Universe productions. This early release is due to an overwhelmingly positive response to “Thunderbolts” so far, which seems more favorable than the general consensus for recent Marvel films on the whole.
Praises for Florence Pugh’s portrayal of Yelena Belova in “Thunderbolts” have been abundant. User Mia Pflüger expressed her admiration by saying, “Florence Pugh raises Yelena Belova to new heights in #Thunderbolts. She adds another dimension of vulnerability, power, and even flawed qualities.” Similarly, Emily Murray was equally enamored with Pugh’s performance and the movie as a whole, stating, “#Thunderbolts is one of the best MCU films in years (and might even become one of my favorites). It’s filled with energy, charm, and tells a deeply emotional story that resonates. I couldn’t help but shed a tear. Florence Pugh steals the show, her performance is outstanding.
According to Empire magazine’s Amon Warmann, this latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film was “exceptionally good” and Florence Pugh’s performance was particularly heartwarming. He also praised the humor in David Harbour’s portrayal of Red Guardian and hinted that Lewis Pullman, who plays Bob (also known as Sentry), might be a standout performer in the impressive ensemble cast.
It’s a darker film with big implications for the MCU
In contrast to previous Marvel Cinematic Universe productions, “Thunderbolts*” stood out with a distinctly somber tone. Matt Neglia from Next Best Picture characterized the narrative as some of Marvel’s most profoundly dark material thus far, commending the performances of Pugh and Pullman. He admitted that it might not be the most spectacular, humorous, or powerful Marvel film, but its gritty aspects seemed appropriate for this band of unconventional misfits. On Letterboxd, critic Rendy Jones applauded the movie’s approach to mental health matters: “[I]t’s refreshing to see a Marvel production tackle mental health and depression as a genuine concern instead of using it for comedic relief.
According to Big Gold Belt Media, the movie is intense, emotional, and unlike anything Marvel has produced so far – a tale that strikes hard yet heals in the right places. They also expressed their astonishment with an emoji suggesting blown minds regarding the post-credits scene. Beanz the Gamer Dad also recommends viewers to stay till the end of the credits because the movie is filled with hints about where the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is heading next. The general opinion appears to be that the performances are outstanding, the dark elements fit perfectly, and those eagerly awaiting “Avengers: Doomsday” should undeniably watch “Thunderbolts*” first.
“Thunderbolts*” opens in theaters on May 2.
