TikTok has shut down.
Due to a new law set to take effect at midnight on January 19, the highly-used social video application has temporarily shut down its operations within the United States.
At approximately 10:30 PM Eastern Time on Saturday, when The Hollywood Reporter opened their app, they encountered a message stating that “TikTok is currently unavailable”.
As a TikTok enthusiast, I regret to inform you that a law prohibiting the use of TikTok has been passed in the U.S. This means we can’t enjoy TikTok at the moment. However, there’s some good news: President Trump has hinted at collaborating with us to restore TikTok once he assumes office. So, keep your fingers crossed and stay updated!
Then, it allows users to either exit the app or explore further by clicking on “Learn More,” taking them to the official TikTok site.
The Biden administration stated that “it’s the responsibility of the incoming administration, which begins its term on Monday, to carry out actions in accordance with the law.
As a gamer, I’ve found myself in a tricky spot with the new law kicking in this Sunday, TikTok decided to shut down rather than face potential sanctions. President-elect Trump, who takes office on Monday, hinted at a possible solution over the weekend that could keep this popular app running.
He indicated to NBC’s Meet the Press that it is highly probable he will approve a 90-day extension, which could offer him and ByteDance’s TikTok some time to devise a resolution.
Trump stated on Friday that the Supreme Court’s ruling was predictable and should be respected by all. He also mentioned that his decision concerning TikTok is forthcoming, but he needs some time to evaluate the circumstances. Keep an eye out for updates!
In reply, TikTok’s CEO Shou Chew posted a video expressing gratitude towards Trump, yet he didn’t explicitly confirm that the platform would continue to function.
He expressed gratitude towards President Trump for his willingness to collaborate with them in seeking a way to keep TikTok operational within the U.S. He considered this as a firm stance upholding the First Amendment and resisting unjust suppression.
Based on info from within the company, it appears that TikTok staff were acting as if the app would continue running smoothly during the coming week.
An earlier this week, a communication was disseminated through Slack, clarifying that TikTok is an internationally recognized brand and can function effectively without continued operation in the U.S. However, it remains unclear about the potential implications for “TikTok U.S.” staff members.
That being said, the source said that the mood inside the company was “tense and confused.”
However, amidst all the political maneuvering, it’s clear that TikTok is currently inactive, and time is running out for a resolution to get it operational again.
