Earlier this year, the acclaimed actress Tilda Swinton, who has won an Oscar, surprised her followers by announcing at the Berlin International Film Festival that she would be temporarily stepping away from filmmaking.
On Wednesday, the well-known entertainer, artist, and trendsetter publicly announced that she is working on an exhibition titled Tilda Swinton – Ongoing, which will be showcased only at the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. The event will display eight pieces produced in partnership with prominent figures such as Pedro Almodóvar, Luca Guadagnino, Joanna Hogg, and Jim Jarmusch.

Swinton stated, “My eyes have allowed me to scrutinize the inner workings of my professional journey over the past four decades. This introspection has led me to appreciate the unchanging foundation of the deep friendships I’ve forged since the beginning, which remain essential to me even today. By highlighting the transformative creative relationships in my life, we recount the stories and environments that fuel us: we present new work, predominantly produced for the Eye exhibition, as the latest expressions resulting from our ongoing discussions that keep me inspired, involved, and fulfilled.
1. She likened the works to “a continuous trail of breadcrumbs in a forest, with fresh leaves sprouting on old trees” and also called them “an everlasting source of seeds.”
Here’s another option:
2. The works were compared to “a thread of breadcrumbs that never ends, weaving through the woods, and new leaves appearing on ancient trees” as well as being referred to as “an eternal nursery for seeds.”
Both options maintain the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language.
Swinton remarked: “What fortune I’ve found, receiving such an invitation, among such companions, and living such a life.
Ever since 2012, I’ve been captivated by Eye’s diverse exhibitions on cinema, the art of filmmaking, and influential directors. However, with the Tilda Swinton exhibition, it delves into a unique perspective – the performer’s active role. As stated, “Actors are frequently considered as passive tools shaped by directors.” But Tilda Swinton – Ongoing challenges this notion, focusing on her proactive input, the possibility of shared authorship, and creative control. By inviting filmmakers and artists with whom she’s forged deep connections over decades, Swinton sheds light on how these long-term relationships shape the films and artworks they produce together.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve observed that Swinton’s art often revolves around several recurring motifs. These include “the beauty and mysteries of nature, personal memories, the very essence of memory, ancestry and spirituality, cherished friendships, and the fascinating realm of creation’s threshold.
As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that five artworks were crafted in collaboration with esteemed filmmakers – Almodóvar, Guadagnino, Hogg, Jarmusch, and Weerasethakul. Here’s an exciting addition: the museum announced that another piece is under development with fashion historian Olivier Saillard, drawing inspiration from Tilda Swinton’s personal archive.
Moreover, the seventh artwork comes to life through the lens of photographer Tim Walker, inviting us to delve into her roots. Lastly, the legacy of Derek Jarman is significantly present in the exhibition: for the eighth work, Swinton will be unveiling previously unreleased archival material from his 8mm film collection.
Starting from September 28th, I’ll be immersed in an exciting exhibit titled “Tilda Swinton – Ongoing”. This run will continue until February 8th. To complement this experience, there’s a lineup of films and discussions planned. For more details about the schedule and other related events, head over to the museum’s website!
