Tim Allen’s Beloved Sitcom, ‘Home Improvement,’ is Coming to Netflix

The popular 1990s sitcom starring Tim Allen, known as “Home Improvement“, is now available on Netflix. Airing for eight seasons on ABC, this series enjoyed immense popularity among viewers, contributing significantly to its success on Disney’s platform. Even the former U.S. President, Jimmy Carter, made a guest appearance on the show.

Home Improvement” made its debut in 1991, focusing on the life of Tim “Tool Man” Taylor (Allen), a local home improvement show host who is married to Jill (Patricia Heaton) and raising three boys. The series ran until May 1999, with Carmen Finestra, Matt Williams, and David McFadzean serving as creators. This classic sitcom from the ’80s and ’90s quickly gained popularity.

It was the memorable characters that made “Home Improvement” a huge success. The cast on the “Tool Time” show provided plenty of humor, with Richard Karn playing Al, the co-host, and Pamela Anderson portraying Lisa, before she became well-known for her role in Baywatch.

During this time, Taylor’s household provided numerous engaging episodes and characters. Heaton’s portrayal of Jill stood strong alongside Allen and his three sons, who were played by Jonathan Taylor Thomas (as Randy), Taran Noah Smith (as Mark), and Zachery Ty Bryan (as Brad). Furthermore, Taylor’s neighbor, Wilson Wilson Jr., was known for offering wise counsel; he was portrayed by the late Earl Hindman, who became a beloved TV character due to his distinctive appearance – wearing a bucket hat and with only part of his face visible behind a fence.

Midway through its run, the much-anticipated animated film “Toy Story” was unveiled in theaters and quickly soared to become a blockbuster sensation both critically and financially. In the latter part of 1995, Allen held the top spots for television show, movie, and book (his autobiography) all at once.

Apart from being well-known, Allen is also recognized for his roles in “The Santa Clause” and the long-running television series “Last Man Standing”, which aired for numerous seasons and close to 200 episodes post his work on “Home Improvement”.

Tim Allen Makes a Return to His Sitcom Roots and One of His Most Popular Characters

Currently, the popular sitcom “Home Improvement” can be found on both Netflix and Disney+. However, Tim Allen’s acting schedule remains quite active. He is set to return to the sitcom format with ABC’s new show titled “Shifting Gears,” which premieres on January 8, 2025. This comedy features some familiar faces including Kat Dennings (known for “Two Broke Girls”), Seann William Scott (from the “American Pie” series), and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (renowned for “Galaxy Quest”). In this show, Allen plays Matt, a widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. His estranged daughter, Riley, portrayed by Dennings, along with her children, reunite with him under unexpected circumstances.

Furthermore, Allen has been keeping himself occupied by lending his voice to Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5, the much-anticipated continuation of one of Pixar and Disney’s beloved animated series. In an interview with Collider, Allen shared a few words about reprising the role of Buzz.

I’ve just completed the initial five-hour run for Buzz. It felt quite unusual to dive back into it. Initially, it was a challenge to get going, but around the two-hour mark, I found myself doing Buzz. I feel incredibly fortunate to be embodying Buzz Lightyear.

Allen further elaborated that the story was exceptionally ingenious. If they hadn’t devised such a brilliant screenplay, they never would have approached us, and they wouldn’t have asked for Tom [Hanks] and I.

Veteran movie maker Andrew Stanton, known for Wall-E at Pixar Studios, is penning the script and teaming up as co-director with McKenna Jean Harris, famed for Luna. This project is set to premiere on June 19, 2026.

Home Improvement is now streaming on Netflix and Disney+.
