As a lifelong fan of Tim Allen’s work, I must say that the resurgence of “The Santa Clause” franchise on Disney+ this year has brought me nothing but joy and nostalgia. Growing up, these movies were a staple of my holiday season, and to see them climb the charts once again fills my heart with Christmas cheer.
This year, Disney+ is seeing an early impact as the classic 1994 holiday comedy “The Santa Clause,” starring Tim Allen, is climbing high on the platform’s chart – aka, the Disney+ movie rankings. Last week, it moved up to fourth place, but has since ascended to the top spot. To add to the festive cheer, “The Santa Clause 2” sequel also made its way into ninth position. Despite being over a month away from Christmas, it appears that an early dose of holiday spirit is already in order!
When it first came out, “The Santa Clause” received positive reviews from both critics and viewers, which was evident in its impressive $190 million box office earnings back in 1994. Before Tim Allen became famous for voicing a certain toy-loving space ranger, he starred as Scott Calvin, a man who unexpectedly had to assume the role of Santa Claus permanently, not just wearing the suit and waving at children at a mall. The film follows a typical Disney narrative filled with trials, obstacles, and an inevitable happy ending where everything is resolved, families are happy, and everyone leaves with a smile on their face.
Without a doubt, every well-liked film often leads to one or two sequels, and The Santa Clause 2 was no exception, debuting in 2002 as a follow-up to the original movie. In this installment, Calvin’s journey as Santa Claus continued, with him needing to find a Mrs. Claus to keep his role as the world’s holiday present deliverer secure. This task proved challenging, especially when factoring in complications with his son Charlie and a self-ambitious robotic Santa who aimed to seize the position for itself. Despite receiving mixed feedback, the series remained popular – and it didn’t stop there.
The Santa Clause 3 & The Santa Clauses
2006 rolled around, and by then, the third installment of this movie series was out. The sparkle that once made it a crowd favorite seemed to be fading, with some critics slamming it as a “jumble of stale jokes and mindless slapstick.” As a result, it ended up being the worst-reviewed (only 17% approval from critics, 39% from audiences) and least profitable movie in the trilogy, earning a mere $110 million at the box office.
Moving on to around two decades later, Tim Allen reappeared as Scott Calvin in the Disney+ series “The Santa Clauses.” The extended narrative garnered better reviews and a substantial audience upon its premiere in 2022. Consequently, the popularity led to additional tales for the Calvins, with Season 2 airing in 2023. As of now, Disney hasn’t confirmed whether there will be a Season 3, but no clear indications have emerged yet.
The continued popularity of “The Santa Clause” may indicate a strong affection for the series and potentially motivate Disney to produce fresh episodes for the upcoming year. In the interim, Allen is set to reprise his iconic Disney character as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the forthcoming “Toy Story 5.” Joining him will be Tom Hanks, who will once more voice cowboy Woody in this new Pixar tale.
