As a long-time Marvel fan and avid follower of Tim Blake Nelson‘s career, I’m thrilled to see him reprising his role as The Leader in “Captain America: Brave New World.” His presence in the MCU dates back to 2008 when he first appeared as Samuel Sterns in “The Incredible Hulk,” a character we all knew would one day become The Leader.
Tim Blake Nelson reveals that his character, The Leader in “Captain America: Brave New World,” will be portrayed using makeup rather than computer-generated imagery. Nelson first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Samuel Sterns, a future adversary of the Hulk known as The Leader, in their second film, “The Incredible Hulk.” Fans have been anticipating the development of this character since “The Incredible Hulk” hinted at The Leader more than sixteen years ago. In 2025, fans will finally witness the culmination of this setup.
At San Diego Comic-Con, Nelson was present during Marvel Studios’ Hall H Presentation. Afterward, in an interview with Comicbook, he discussed anticipations for The Leader. He shared his persistence with Marvel Studios to bring the character to life through makeup, allowing him a more immersive experience and enabling fellow actors to react authentically. Although Nelson would have taken on the role regardless of their decision, fortunately, Marvel granted his request.
“Upon being asked to reprise my role as this character, I requested a particular arrangement – though I must add, if they’d declined, I would have still taken part…but I feigned having the ability to negotiate. I humbly pleaded with them to allow me to work in a more practical manner instead of using dots for filming. Instead, I wanted an appliance that would give me the sensation of its weight and let me see myself with it when looking in the mirror. This choice, I believe, adds depth to my performance by allowing the other actors on set to see me as I am during our interactions.”
The Leader Breaks MCU Hulk Tradition
Marvel Studios has given a sneak peek of the Red Hulk in the preview for “Captain America: Brave New World,” and showed him at San Diego Comic-Con. However, they have kept The Leader’s identity a secret. We catch brief glimpses of him, but we haven’t seen how special effects bring him to life. It’s unclear if his final reveal will still be a surprise, but based on past releases, it’s doubtful. The way Red Hulk is brought to life through motion capture underscores how distinct The Leader is within the MCU when compared to other Hulk characters.
In the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), characters such as Banner’s Hulk, Abomination, She-Hulk, and Red Hulk are brought to life using CGI motion capture technology. On the other hand, The Leader is the sole major gamma-infused character portrayed through makeup and prosthetics. This technique harks back to the 1978 “Incredible Hulk” series, where the Hulk was brought to life on screen through actor Lou Ferrigno and makeup effects. In a nod to this classic representation, the finale of “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” featured Devon Lewis donning makeup for the role of “The Savage She-Hulk” in a humorous reenactment of the original series’ opening scene.
In the MCU, there’s a tendency to rely more on CGI than practical effects in numerous films. An illustration of this can be found in Kelsey Grammer’s Beast in the post-credit scene for “The Marvels.” Nevertheless, exceptions exist, such as James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3,” which set a new record for the most prosthetic applications used in a film. The upcoming “Fantastic Four: First Steps” will bring both Thing and Galactus to life through CGI. It appears that only extraordinary situations, like those involving non-human characters such as The Leader, warrant practical effects over digital enhancements.
