Tim Burton Reveals Personal Reasons Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Took So Long

As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for Tim Burton’s whimsical worlds and dark humor, I eagerly await the release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”. Having grown up watching the original 1988 classic, it’s fascinating to learn about the personal reasons that have made this sequel so meaningful for Burton.

Prior to the launch of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in September, director Tim Burton is opening up about his deeply rooted reasons for delaying a sequel. The movie hits theaters on September 6th and sees Burton team up once more with original actors Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, alongside newcomers Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, and Willem Dafoe. The plot unfolds 36 years after the original film, as the Deetz family visit Winter River to pay their respects to a deceased relative, but instead find themselves entangled in Betelgeuse’s usual mayhem.

According to Slashfilm, Burton attended a press event for the movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and he shared that he couldn’t make the sequel earlier since he hadn’t gone through all of life’s highs and lows yet. Over time, as years passed since the original Beetlejuice, Burton matured and became a parent, which made him curious about what had happened to Lydia. He believes that only time could have provided the right answers, making the sequel a deeply personal project for him.

Reflecting on myself after 35 years, it feels like a significant leap from youthful vigor to adulthood – an unexpected transformation, perhaps. Relationships I’ve formed, both personal and professional, have evolved in ways that were unimaginable during my teenage years. I’ve been blessed with children who have enriched my life in ways I could not have foreseen back then. It’s a journey I wouldn’t have embarked on at their age, but now, it feels like an integral part of who I am today.

“You can only understand and connect with it after going through those experiences yourself. For me, it felt like a unique, almost surreal family film, revolving around an unusual family, or perhaps I should say an unusual movie about an unusual family, I’m not sure which perspective is the most fitting.”

Burton compared it to the process of creating the movie ‘Big Fish’, a story centered around a terminally ill father’s reconciliation with his son. Since his own father passed away in 2000, he mentions that this emotional experience was necessary for him to successfully direct such a film.

In a similar vein, creating Big Fish was something I couldn’t have done prior to my father’s passing. The emotions that unexpectedly surfaced during its creation allowed me to bring it to life. Similarly, this project required those same emotional depths to come into being.

Winona Ryder Was Also Eager to Explore What Happened to Lydia

At the age of 52 now, it was when Winona Ryder was just 15 that she starred in “Beetlejuice”. Back in those days, Lydia was a rebellious and melancholic teenager who had been forced to move from her home in bustling New York to a quiet, rural town. Her dark fashion tastes and peculiar traits made her feel like an oddball, almost like a pig out of place at church. Far from imagining her character ever becoming a mother, this was the last role Winona Ryder envisioned herself playing.

The actress expressed that she hadn’t imagined Lydia would have kids or be in a relationship; instead, she thought Lydia would remain isolated as she grew older. However, Burton’s script took her by surprise, causing her to ponder many of the same questions that the director had regarding the sequel.

The main issue at hand was figuring out her current identity. It’s a situation we’ve all found ourselves in before, wondering, “What on earth was I thinking,” regarding our relationships.

The new sequel seems to have a deep, existentialist approach, which might connect with viewers who’ve watched the first movie 35 years back and since then lived their own lives. We get to catch up with Lydia and see how her life has unfolded, especially in relation to her daughter, as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premieres on September 6, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
