As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating virtual worlds, I find myself drawn to the real-life setting of CBS’ upcoming comedy pilot “DMV”. Having survived countless boss battles and mission objectives, I can certainly relate to the daily grind that is depicted in this show – albeit in a very different context.
CBS‘ comedy pilot DMV is starting to staff up.
Tim Meadows will appear in a one-camera series produced by CBS Studios, with Dana Klein serving as creator (known for ‘Friends’ and ‘9JKL’ on CBS). As suggested by its title, ‘DMV’ is set within a department of motor vehicles office and focuses on the employees who work there.
On Saturday Night Live and The Goldbergs, alum Meadows will portray Gregg, a previous high school teacher now working at the DMV as an examiner. Gregg prefers to rush through driving tests and the workday itself. He possesses a remarkable knack for spot-on observations of others and exhibits a sardonic, defeated demeanor, yearning for retirement more than anything else.
The DMV is one of three comedic productions currently being worked on by CBS at different stages. The other two are Eternally Yours, a series centered around a family of vampires created by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, who were the showrunners for Ghosts; this project has already set up a writers’ room. Then there’s Area 51, which takes place at the secretive military base in Nevada, and is being developed by writers Steven Lilien, Bryan Winbrandt, and Laura Moran. Similar to DMV, both Eternally Yours and Area 51 originate from CBS Studios.
The series known as DMV is inspired by a short story penned by Katherine Heiny. CBS characterizes it as a humorous office comedy filmed using a single camera, taking place at the location people dislike visiting most: the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Our unique and endearing characters are earning minimum wage while performing an unappreciated job where customers arrive already irritable. Fortunately, they have each other to make things bearable.
Klein executive produces with Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling and Robyn Meisinger.
