Andrew DeYoung’s latest film, “Friendship“, explores this idea intensely and employs comedian Tim Robinson to push the boundaries of awkwardness to their extreme limit.

The movie is filled with many laugh-out-loud situations reminiscent of long sketches from the popular Netflix series, “I Think You Should Leave,” by Robinson. However, among these humorous moments, there are also thoughtful insights woven into the storyline. Throughout the plot, DeYoung’s character behaves recklessly and causes chaos everywhere he goes.

An Awkward Dad Pursues Friendship with a Cool Guy

In the year 2024, I embody the quintessential suburban dad persona. By day, I’m immersed in brainstorming strategies to make mobile apps irresistible at my workplace. Outside of work hours, you can find me enthusiastically discussing the latest Marvel blockbuster. My wardrobe, particularly Ocean View Dining attire, is a perfect fit for me.

Tami, his wife who operates a floral business, longs for a larger vehicle. Their teenage son, Steven, is a great kid. What else could a middle-aged guy want? Apparently quite a bit, as we discover when he receives a package intended for the neighbor, mistakenly delivered to him. When Craig decides to return it and meet the new neighbors, he finds Austin Carmichael, who seems like a promising new friend, played by Paul Rudd.

Previously, Craig’s concept of risk involved attempting a “SEAL Team 6”-style local restaurant challenge that packed over 20,000 calories. However, Austin stands out. He’s not just any guy – he’s a stylish meteorologist who also owns and is well-versed in the history of ancient artifacts. To top it off, he knows hidden underground tunnels! This all leaves Craig in admiration. In Craig’s eyes, Austin embodies everything he aspires to be, even going as far as playing in a rock band on the side.

Paul Rudd and a Strong Supporting Cast Complement Robinson

Sadly, Craig seems to be devoid of a mechanism to dampen his enthusiasm. He often blurts out inappropriate things at the wrong times and can become irritable when things don’t go as planned. DeYoung provides Robinson with ample space to showcase his humorously awkward insights, which range from one extreme to another. Rudd skillfully emulates the comedic charm of his Brian Fantana character from 2004’s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, perfectly counterbalancing Robinson’s unrefined exuberance. Similarly, Mara and Dylan Grazer deliver performances that beautifully accentuate Craig’s growing instability.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a shiver of excitement when Austin invites me over to hang with his crew. I wonder what kind of shenanigans Craig might get up to this time. The gathering is marked by a rousing rendition of Ghost Town DJs’ “My Boo,” a moment that later provides plenty of laughs as it becomes a recurring joke. However, things take an unexpected turn when Austin finds himself in an unusual predicament – a platonic break-up. But what do you do when your friend just won’t let go? Craig seems determined to win back Austin’s favor, becoming increasingly fixated on the situation. It’s at this juncture where the line between friendship and something more becomes precariously blurred in Friendship.

Friendship Gets Sketchy but Comes Together Beautifully

Robinson masterfully navigates the movie’s thrilling yet precarious second half, transitioning from one outrageous tale to another as Craig’s life spirals out of control. However, at some point, the film seems to play out like a series of implausible situations searching for a resolution. At times, Friendship appears to be in conflict with itself, focusing more on pushing its awkward humor to extremes instead of delving into the genuine complexities of friendship and solitude that resonate with viewers. It can occasionally feel like a string of half-baked ideas strung together.

In a more relaxed and understandable way, the film Friendship presents Craig as someone who can be harsh for some individuals. However, it’s important to note that he stays true to himself, which is significant in the long run. This ambiguity about Craig is something DeYoung explores throughout the film. The movie poses questions about whether someone like Craig will ever find their community. Everyone requires connections and friendships, regardless of how they present themselves publicly – even men. Yet, there’s a lingering doubt: could some of us be beyond hope?

In a more concise rephrasing, Friendship portrays Craig as someone who can be tough for many, but he remains true to himself. The movie delves into the question of whether people like Craig will ever find their group. It emphasizes that everyone needs companionship and friendships, regardless of our facades – even men. However, it raises a concern: could some of us be unredeemable?

Lastly, the film initially appears somewhat detached and disorganized in its second half but eventually tackles its themes with depth and complexity.

Produced by A24, “Friendship” is scheduled to be released in New York (at the Angelika Film Center and AMC Lincoln Square) and Los Angeles (Vista Theatre on 35mm, AMC Century City, AMC Grove, AMC Burbank) on May 9, 2025. After that, it will expand to additional cities on May 16, including Austin, Boston, Chicago, Nashville, Portland (Oregon), Raleigh (North Carolina), San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington D.C., before being released nationwide on May 23, 2025.
