Titanic

Despite the trend of criticizing the 1997 film drama, “Titanic,” it remains one of the standout movies for Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, and is often quoted in discussions about romance. Over two decades since its release, and over a century after the real-life event it portrays, viewers on streaming platforms continue to be captivated by the tragic love story between Jack and Rose, as “Titanic” has found new life on these platforms.

As of now, Titanic holds the top spot among movies on Hulu’s weekly ranking. This movie needs no introduction, given its enduring popularity and influence. The tale of Jack and Rose’s forbidden love aboard the RMS Titanic has been extensively referenced, satirized, and humorously depicted by enthusiasts and critics alike. For those new to this or living in isolation for over two decades, Titanic tells the story of Jack, who manages to secure a ticket on the supposedly unsinkable Titanic through a game of poker. During his journey, he develops a romantic connection with a first-class passenger named Rose, who is pressured into marrying a wealthy suitor. Their relationship unfolds over a few days before the ship strikes an iceberg. The ensuing events are part of history now.

Contrary to popular opinion today, the film Titanic, released in 1997, was an enormous success when it first came out. With a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, this rating takes into account reviews from its initial release and more recent critiques by contemporary critics. To date, Titanic remains one of the highest-grossing movies ever, having earned over $2.2 billion globally, largely due to multiple re-releases. Alongside Avatar in 2009, Titanic has significantly contributed to director James Cameron’s status as the second most commercially successful filmmaker of all time, trailing only Steven Spielberg.

‘Titanic’s Ending Is Infamous

Regardless of whether you’ve watched the movie “Titanic” or not, it’s probably familiar to most people that its tragic ending involves Rose and Jack. After the ship sinks, Rose manages to cling onto a door while Jack floats nearby. Despite his efforts, he concludes there isn’t enough space for both of them on the door. Consequently, Jack perishes due to hypothermia and plunges into the ocean depths. For many years, fans have debated whether they could have both fit on the door. The team from “MythBusters” eventually investigated this theory, finding out that indeed, with some clever engineering (such as attaching their life jackets to the bottom of the door), they could both have survived.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder over the dramatic end of Titanic, where the older Rose (Gloria Stuart) discards her precious necklace that symbolized Jack. This seemingly insignificant action, however, was actually a costly decision that could have potentially funded a massive relief effort. The necklace, you see, was the very one the diving team were searching for.

Many fans argue that she not only misled an expensive expedition but also gave away millions of dollars’ worth of jewelry that could have been used to aid those in need. In the movie, her act represented her cherished memories with Jack and their time together remaining a secret between them. Yet, it’s hard not to think about all the charitable causes that could have benefited if she had chosen to sell it instead!
