Titus Welliver Reveals Shocking Similarities Between Bosch and Batman!

Saying goodbye to Harry Bosch is imminent with the end of the series approaching – at least for a short while. Before the final episode, the beloved actor sat down with George Edelman from MovieWeb to discuss his time playing Michael Connelly’s relentless detective, delving into an insightful comparison of how the character shares traits with Sherlock Holmes.

For over a decade, Welliver has embodied the character Harry Bosch, first in the series “Bosch” and later in “Bosch: Legacy”. With the second series wrapping up, the actor has been pondering why this character has persisted and remains incredibly well-liked even after over a decade on screen, and he believes there’s a solid explanation for it.

Bosch is the epitome of a complex protagonist, rather than a traditional hero. He has flaws and isn’t just a character wearing a white hat with two guns. Instead, he has a rich inner life. Characters like Bosch are often complex, as they aren’t strictly good or bad but exist somewhere in between. I used to describe him as a cop having a tough day, but there’s a deep-rooted darkness and trauma within him. Bosch isn’t particularly open about his emotions, so he’s not someone who readily discusses himself. In other words, he’s not fond of the topic of himself.

This connects to a particular instance in the remarkable Batman comic, “The Dark Knight Returns,” as pointed out by Welliver. To elaborate further:

The concept of anti-heroes has been brilliantly portrayed, and ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ serves as a prime example. In this story, there’s a particularly powerful panel where the character says something like, “I am a man of 50, my body is riddled with muscle pain and agony.” However, he continues, “I have been reborn,” which adds an extraordinary dimension to that single frame. This idea has always resonated with me. Harry, for instance, doesn’t possess superpowers. Instead, his unique ability lies in his keen observation skills, making him an exceptional detective.”

This version aims to maintain the original meaning while using simpler and more natural language.

‘Bosch: Legacy’ is Ending, but Harry Bosch Will Return

Typically, when a series concludes, it signals the end of a character’s journey and their absence – unless there’s a reboot down the line. However, unlike many characters, Titus Welliver doesn’t anticipate Harry Bosch’s story to be over. Although his current series is drawing to a close, he’s set to reappear in the upcoming spinoff series called Ballard, and he’s optimistic about the possibility of another movie comeback in the future. One thing that can be guaranteed, is that he intends to reunite the Bosch team, no matter what future project it may be for.

Michael Connelly, Henrik Basten, and Tom Benarda, including myself, have plans to collaborate on a project. We’ve been working together for over ten years, and we don’t want our partnership to come to an end. If it’s not going to be the Bosch series, then it will be something else.
