A musical about girl group TLC will make its world premiere in Washington D.C. next summer.

Under the guidance of Olivier Award winner Kwame Kwei-Armah, the musical “CrazySexyCool – The TLC Musical” will make its debut at Arena Stage Theater from June 12, 2026 to August 9. This production offers a semi-autobiographical perspective on the renowned girl group known for hits like “No Scrubs,” “Waterfalls,” and “Unpretty.

The show includes well-known tunes by TLC, and it’s Chloe O. Davis who’ll be in charge of the choreography. Notably, Kwei-Armah has previously written and directed “One Love: The Bob Marley Musical.”

According to Kwei-Armah, TLC stands for rebellion – they use their art to question, overturn, and amuse. The question is why a musical and why now? He believes their stories deserve to be sung; it’s high time we did so!

The musical “Damn Yankees,” a fresh take penned by Will Power, Doug Wright, and Lynn Ahrens, will be one of nine productions presented during Arena Stage’s 75th anniversary season in the years 2025/2026. Sergio Trujillo is set to direct this production as part of the celebratory event.

The season will also feature the production titled “Pal Joey,” jointly directed by the award-winning choreographer Savion Glover and multitalented figure Tony Goldwyn. They collaborated on a fresh take of this musical, which was previously staged at New York City Center in 2023.

This upcoming theater season includes several exciting productions. Among them is a revival of “Inherit the Wind,” a play centered around two prominent lawyers debating the right to teach evolution in schools, led by director Ryan Guzzo Purcell. Also new is “Fremont Ave.,” a multi-generational dramatic-comedy directed by two-time Helen Hayes Award winner Lili-Anne Brown. Additionally, Christopher Chen’s “The Motion” is described as an intense examination of human nature, directed by Arena Stage Artistic Director Hana S. Sharif. Lastly, a one-woman show titled “A Good Day to Me Not You,” featuring Lameece Issaq and directed by Lee Sunday Evans, will also be featured in the season.

The season concludes with a melodious memoir, titled “My Joy is Heavy“, penned by Abigail and Shaun Bengson, chronicling their experiences with pregnancy loss. Notably, this production will be directed by the Tony Award-winning director Rachel Chavkin.
