As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in both virtual and cinematic worlds, I find myself in agreement with Glen Powell’s perspective on the unique appeal of films like Top Gun: Maverick compared to the Marvel Universe. While I’ve cheered for Iron Man and the Avengers as they saved the world from impending doom, there’s an undeniable allure in stories that depict ordinary individuals with extraordinary abilities, such as the pilots in Top Gun, fighting battles that feel closer to reality.
Glen Powell, known for his acting career spanning many years, first gained prominence with roles in films like “Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over” and a minor part in “The Dark Knight Rises”. However, it was the blockbuster hit “Top Gun: Maverick” from 2022 that catapulted him to global stardom. Starring alongside Tom Cruise, Powell played the character Hangman in this highly-praised movie, which was the second highest-grossing film of that year. Interestingly, around two and a half years after its release, Powell has likened “Maverick” to top-notch Marvel movies, and his assessment is excellent.
2024 proved to be another successful year for Powell, as he graced the screens in “Hit Man” and “Twisters.” The first can be enjoyed with a Netflix membership, while the latter requires a Peacock subscription. His impressive portrayal of Gary Johnson in “Hit Man” recently earned him a nomination for a Golden Globe award. Additionally, an interview he conducted with Everyday Warrior Nation has been released, during which he discusses what sets “Top Gun: Maverick” apart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other superhero narratives. Kicking off his discussion, he explained:
For quite some time now, we’ve been engrossed in Marvel films. They are indeed captivating. Yet, one can’t help but ponder, aren’t these more like fictional tales of heroes rather than representations of real-life ones? What sets a common person apart as a superhero is merely an extraordinary skillset and immense courage – qualities that may be found among us in our daily lives.
Being both a frequent viewer of Marvel films sequentially and an admirer of the superhero genre as a whole, I concur with Glen Powell’s perspective. While it’s thrilling to witness characters like Spider-Man and The Hulk battle aliens, mad scientists, and other perils, it’s equally fascinating when we get to see the type of heroes that Powell refers to. For instance, in the film Top Gun: Maverick, these were pilots, but regardless of the profession, the essence remains the same. These characters display their skills and courage in a setting that, though exaggerated, is more akin to reality. Powell further stated:
I admire Marvel productions because they’re grand, cinematic, and entertaining, and they excel at what they do more than anyone else. On the other hand, Top Gun stands out to me as something truly exceptional. It’s authentic in that we film on real aircraft carriers with actual bases. The pilots who fly us are genuine Top Gun aviators. To me, this feels like a far greater achievement compared to anything else.
I appreciate a good CGI slugfest among superheroes and supervillains, but Glen Powell’s right, when it’s an incredible feat actually being performed in real life, that makes for an extra special cinematic moment. In Top Gun: Maverick’s case, you can revisit those aerial spectacles and watch Powell act opposite Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and many others by streaming the sequel with a Paramount+ subscription. Powell has also teased that Top Gun 3 is in the works, but that has yet to be officially confirmed.
In the coming months, the actor will appear in “The Running Man,” set to premiere on November 21, 2025. Up next in the Marvel universe is “Captain America: Brave New World,” scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day, 2022.
