Todd McFarlane Doesn’t Really Care About Deadpool & Wolverine Homage

Todd McFarlane Doesn't Really Care About Deadpool & Wolverine Homage

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and cinematic aficionado, I find myself consistently amazed by the intricate webs that connect our beloved superheroes across various timelines and mediums. The recent blockbuster, Deadpool & Wolverine, is no exception, skillfully weaving together nods to iconic comic book covers, including the legendary work of Todd McFarlane.

Apart from incorporating numerous winks to cherished Marvel characters in fan-service cameos, Deadpool & Wolverine also acknowledges the comics that paved the way for its creation. In a sequence where Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) leaps through time hunting for another Wolverine (initially Hugh Jackman, later briefly Henry Cavill), both Reynolds and director Shawn Levy subtly included references to renowned comic books featuring Deadpool and Logan. Todd McFarlane, the mind behind Spawn and a well-loved writer for The Incredible Hulk comics, hadn’t watched Deadpool & Wolverine yet but was informed that his comic book cover was given tribute in the film. His reaction was pricelessly amusing.

As a passionate film aficionado, I had the pleasure of chatting with Todd McFarlane about his work gracing the silver screen in the latest MCU movie. Contrary to expectations, McFarlane offered a charmingly laidback response, expressing more nonchalance than anticipated. He expressed gratitude whenever other productions reference his comics, but admitted he doesn’t actively follow these instances. Interestingly, he added that those nearest to him often display more excitement about this recognition than he does himself. In his own words:

Occasionally, people inform me about something in a TV series or film that references me, even when it shows up as a Jeopardy! question. Since it’s unexpected, I’m somewhat taken aback and respond, “Well, I wasn’t involved with it, so I don’t know.” It seems my neighbors get especially excited about it; they might come knocking on the door to ask, “Did you catch The Big Bang Theory last night? They mentioned you.”

The iconic cover for Todd McFarlane’s Incredible Hulk has endured as one of the most classic comic book covers in history, being reimagined throughout various Marvel and DC Comics series, including Deadpool runs. For those unfamiliar with Todd McFarlane’s work, his influence on the comics industry extends well beyond this famous cover. In fact, McFarlane is the mind behind Spawn, a widely admired comic book character known for possessing supernatural abilities.

Published by McFarlane’s Image Comics, the character Spawn was transformed into a live-action film in 1997 with Michael Jai White portraying the main character. Despite negative critic reviews, Spawn has gained a devoted following among modern fans, similar to other cult comic book movies such as The Crow. Now, like many revered comic book adaptations, Spawn is set for a modern revamp.

A Spawn remake has been in the works for years, never quite moving beyond early development. However, the current iteration of the project appears hopeful, as McFarlane has been providing fans with regular updates, including an official title. King Spawn is currently searching for a director as the script is nearing completion. Produced by Blumhouse, the new movie currently has no actors attached. It was previously reported that Jamie Foxx was tapped for the leading role, but the actor hasn’t confirmed if he remains involved in the movie.
