Tola Adefioye of Old Old Woods Breaks Down His Favourite Items From Habitat’s 60th Anniversary Collection

As a design enthusiast with a penchant for mid-century modern pieces, I must say that Habitat’s 60th-anniversary collection is nothing short of a marvel! Having spent countless hours rummaging through vintage stores and flea markets, it’s a rare treat to see such iconic designs reimagined for the modern home.

Habitat’s anniversary collection for its 60th year is now available, and an exhibit titled “Changing Spaces: 60 Years of Design with Habitat” has opened at the Design Museum in London. This marks the start of six decades of festivities celebrating Habitat’s homeware designs.

Working together with renowned designers and drawing from our in-house talents, this exclusive line showcases practical, colorful items that are inspired by the British brand’s rich heritage and its significant role in modern design culture. The collection is a testament to its extensive archives and illustrious history of influencing contemporary design.

In honor of introducing our 60th-anniversary collection, we’ve invited Tola Adefioye, an esteemed curator and founder of Old Old Woods, a renowned mid-century furniture store in London, to highlight his preferred items for the premier episode of our “Selected 5” showcase.

Scoop Chair

First introduced in the 1970s, the Scoop Chair showcased a modern, sunken curve that reflected the contemporary neo-futuristic style of the period.

In collaboration with renowned designer David Hutcheson, Habitat is bringing back an iconic chair with a fresh, contemporary touch. Draped in luxurious cord fabric, this cozy accent chair effortlessly introduces a modern vibe to any living space.

Portobello Metal Touch Table Lamp

The Portobello Metal Touch Table Lamp, like its ’70s counterpart, is crafted using the same traditional hand-blowing technique. It represents an updated version of the iconic FUNGO lamp from the past.

Designed by our in-house senior homeware and lighting expert Tom Sullivan, this piece showcases a curved shape and a color combination of blue, lilac, and white, evoking a mid-century aesthetic. Equipped with a three-level dimmer function for adjustable light settings, the lamp adds a splash of color to a room, even when it’s switched off.

Tam Tam Stool

Besides its fun nickname, the Tam Tam Stool is recognized as an icon from the 1960s. Compact yet comfortable, this versatile design offers hidden storage for extra space, making it ideal for contemporary lifestyles. It can be stacked and stored effortlessly, too. Made of plastic with vivid color options, the stool caters to both indoor and outdoor settings.

Crate Fruit Bowl

The Crate Fruit Bowl, a creation of renowned designer Andrew Tanner, made its debut in 1999 – a time marked by an appreciation for forward-thinking designs and excitement as we entered a brand-new millennium.

Drawing inspiration from its cardboard counterpart, the creative ceramic platter showcases a minimalist design that allows for an entertaining presentation of foods, as Adefioye notes. “From neatly arranged rows of fruits like apples, oranges, or plums, to various flavored ice creams,” he adds.

Yumemi Shelf

Originating from the creative minds of the third generation Conran designers, the Yumemi Shelf is a brilliant invention by Felix Conrad, grandson of Habitat founder Terence. Maintaining their tradition of offering practical everyday items, this shelf boasts sleek curves and a glossy hand-lacquered finish for a modern, understated look that harmoniously blends with its surroundings, as Adefioye explains.

Besides eagerly anticipating the next five instalments of Habitat’s curated series, I can hardly wait to dive into even more unique and exceptional content from their forthcoming product launches.
