During a solemn occasion, Tom Cruise made an appearance at CinemaCon. As he stepped onto the stage, there was a wave of applause, and he began by honoring the late Val Kilmer, his fellow actor from Top Gun, who passed away on Tuesday.
For a brief moment, I’d like to acknowledge my dear friend Val Kilmer,” Cruise said to the audience’s approval. “I have always admired his talent tremendously,” he expressed further, mentioning that he deeply appreciates Kilmer as an individual and was thankful for his appearance in the movie Top Gun: Maverick.
After that, Cruise requested everyone to observe a brief moment of remembrance for Kilmer. He expressed, “If we could all simply pause for a while to recall the joyful times we shared with him – let’s do just that.” Lastly, he concluded by saying, “I hope you find peace on your upcoming journey.
One of the world’s rare movie stars, Cruise, recently arrived in Las Vegas to take part in Paramount and Skydance’s presentation. This event was attended by thousands of global owners along The Strip this week. More specifically, he aided in unveiling the complete trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and handing over one of CinemaCon’s top awards to director and longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie personally.
The star delivered a speech praising his regular partner in filmmaking, emphasizing their efforts to carry on the Mission: Impossible series amidst the pandemic and two Hollywood strikes.
This individual persevered and managed to craft extraordinary tales that captivated audiences worldwide,” Cruise stated. “You’re a timeless artist, you are our contemporary Thalberg, a nod to the esteemed producer Irving Thalberg,” the actor added further.
Standing on stage, gratefully accepting my award, I couldn’t help but acknowledge Tom’s role in my success. “It was Tom who saw the director within me, the one holding this prestigious award,” I expressed. “Tom, it’s because of your foresight and faith that I stand here today.
The teaser reveals Tom Cruise’s customary high-octane actions as field agent Ethan Hunt. In the clip for the movie billed as Cruise’s farewell to the role, he says, “I require your trust one more time.”

The trailer displays Tom Cruise’s typical thrilling action sequences playing as field agent Ethan Hunt. The film, marketed as Cruise’s final portrayal of this character, features him saying, “Trust me once again.
As a dedicated admirer of live theater, I’ve always made it a point to engage with CinemaCon whenever my busy filming or post-production schedule allows. However, there have been instances when I had to watch from afar due to shooting obligations. But in 2018, I was thrilled to attend the event personally! That year, I was both proud to accept the award for “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and honored to receive the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneer of the Year accolade.
The movie, which premieres during Memorial Day weekend, carries significant weight for Cruise and McQuarrie. Originally planned as the second installment of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning,” its release was delayed due to disappointing box office performance of “Dead Reckoning” in summer 2024, with a global total of $571 million.
Several critics argue that the film may have suffered, to some extent, due to what’s known as the Barbernheimer Effect – a situation where Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” both premiering around the same time after “Mission: Impossible,” drew audiences away from the theater. The industry was still grappling with the pandemic’s impact, and Tom Cruise, in a rare move, encouraged viewers to watch both films. Unbeknownst to him, this dual promotion could have inadvertently diminished the success of his own movie.
Following its initial launch, Cruise decided to slow down production. He and McQuarrie postponed the second movie, initially known as “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part Two,” for a year in order to revamp the plotline.
The Instagram post, which was captioned by Cruise, announced the official title of the film and its first poster in December 2024, with the message: “Each decision has brought us here.
In this exciting turn of events, I find myself once again stepping into the shoes of Ethan Hunt, in the eighth installment of our thrilling saga. Alongside me are familiar faces like Henry Czerny, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, and Vanessa Kirby. This new adventure also brings us Hannah Waddingham, Nick Offerman, Katy O’Brian, and Tramell Tillman to round out the exceptional cast.
Paramount Pictures and David Ellison’s Skydance Entertainment, overseen by Cruise and McQuarrie, are working on a film that is pending federal approval for Ellison’s acquisition of Paramount to be finalized.
The production of the film for Paramount and David Ellison’s Skydance Entertainment, led by Cruise and McQuarrie, is underway, but still awaiting federal approval as a part of Ellison’s plan to take over Paramount.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve always been eager about Cruise’s desire to continue making “Mission: Impossible” movies well into his 80s. However, The Hollywood Reporter unveiled some intriguing news earlier this month. Apparently, Paramount was considering marketing the eighth film as the supposed “final” chapter in the series, to stir up more audience excitement (and possibly due to budget concerns). There’s even speculation that the movie could grace the Cannes Film Festival in early May.
More to come.
