Tom Cruise is experiencing a peak of success following the blockbuster opening of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which grossed an impressive $200 million worldwide on its first run. Combined with Disney’s Lilo & Stitch raking in a staggering $341 million, the Memorial Day weekend of 2025 now holds the record for the highest-grossing box office weekend ever recorded.
Actor Cruise expressed his appreciation on Instagram, extending gratitude not only to his fans but also to everyone behind the scenes of movie-making – from directors and crew members, to studio associates and cinema staff. In a heartfelt note he wrote himself, he particularly thanked those who take time to watch his films.

This weekend was truly remarkable and will be remembered for a long time! I want to extend my gratitude and congratulations to every filmmaker, artist, crew member, and studio employee who made this possible. A big thank you also goes out to all the theaters and their staff for helping bring these stories to life on the big screen. I’d like to acknowledge Paramount Pictures and Skydance for our years of collaboration and constant support. Lastly, my heartfelt thanks go out to audiences everywhere – we create our work for you, and it is an honor to entertain you.”
Sincerely, Tom.
The latest addition to the Mission: Impossible series, its eighth part, is currently smashing box office records. As reported by Variety, the movie grossed approximately $63 million within three days domestically and an estimated $77 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. This makes it the highest opening in the franchise so far.

As a cinephile, I must admit that the initial scenes of The Final Reckoning are quite impressive. However, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern when considering its path to financial success. With an alleged production cost of nearly $400 million, this film finds itself among the priciest ever made in cinematic history. A significant chunk of these costs accumulated during the lockdown period, where delays, reshoots, and safety measures inflated expenses across the board.
This implies that the movie needs to generate revenues well over $800 million worldwide just to cover its costs, and that’s before we even talk about making a profit. It’s an uphill battle, to say the least.
In his efforts to spread the word about the movie worldwide, Cruise has been unceasingly active, making appearances at various international events such as the Cannes Film Festival. At this event, the film, titled “The Final Reckoning“, received an extended 7½-minute standing ovation. However, when asked by Variety about potential rumors that this might be his last portrayal of Ethan Hunt, Cruise was evasive with his response.

He expressed, “I prefer if everyone simply experiences it and enjoys themselves, as we’ve had an incredible journey creating it and it’s been a blast. I merely want you all to enjoy yourselves. Savor this moment, for everything leads up to it… we’ve reached this peak right now.
Under the direction of Christopher McQuarrie and in collaboration with Erik Jendresen, the movie titled Mission: Impossible – Fallout features Tom Cruise alongside Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett on its star-studded cast.

As a dedicated film enthusiast, I’ve been thoroughly captivated by Tom Cruise’s latest cinematic feat that’s left box office records in ruins and elicited heartfelt gratitude from the man himself. Once again, people are hailing him as “the last authentic movie star.” However, whether this mission of the franchise will turn out to be its most lucrative is still a mystery yet to unfold.
