Currently, Tom Cruise is arguably the most prominent movie star globally; however, studios remain hesitant when it comes to funding his large-scale action films, even after the conclusion of the Mission: Impossible franchise this year. Yet, Cruise shows no signs of slowing down as he prepares for an underwater thriller directed by Doug Liman, slated to be his next significant project. Regrettably, fans may have to wait longer for its release, as it appears that the primary studio financing has withdrawn their support.
Based on Puck’s report, Warner Bros. has temporarily halted production on the movie “Deeper,” originally starring Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas. The reason for this pause is said to be the enormous production budget of $275 million. Whether Warner Bros. will abandon the project altogether or not is uncertain, but it’s rumored that Cruise is currently shopping the film around to other studios. There’s a possibility that the underwater adventure movie could still be produced, but there seems to be significant doubt due to the budget and the lack of profitability of the last “Mission: Impossible” film, which was reportedly just as expensive to produce.
After sealing a deal with Alejandro González Iñárritu’s upcoming movie, scheduled for release by the studio on October 2, 2026, it appeared that Cruise and Warner Bros. would carry on their collaboration. However, if Deeper gets produced elsewhere, Paramount Pictures could be a likely choice given their recent success with films like Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Top Gun: Maverick. Yet, Universal Pictures seems to be among the top contenders. Deeper tells the story of an astronaut venturing on a deep sea mission where he encounters a menacing force in an ocean trench. Since its initial announcement in 2016, the project has seen various actors and directors attached to it, but Cruise remains committed to pushing this production into development for this year.
