Tom Cruise is currently in a phase where he’s producing sequels, but it’s not just a trip down memory lane. He consistently pushes boundaries with his Mission: Impossible sequels and their jaw-dropping stunt sequences. Top Gun: Maverick surpassed the original, offering breathtaking aerial sequences that demanded a cinema experience. Now, it appears Cruise is set to carry on his successful run with a new Days of Thunder sequel, and at least one retired NASCAR racer seems keen on the concept.
Legendary NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon discussed the idea of a follow-up to Tom Cruise’s 1990 racing film. As reported by AP News, Gordon mentioned during the Daytona International Speedway event that he has actually communicated with the actor about the prospect of NASCAR being part of this hypothetical sequel.
I’ve discussed the project with Tom since I want him involved, and we hope to participate if it comes to fruition. He seems to be hinting at it, but I’m unsure. We’ll wait and see what develops. If this doesn’t pan out, I believe there will be another opportunity for NASCAR to return to the big screen, perhaps a compelling documentary series or something even more exciting than what we have now.
Based on reports, Jeff Gordon and Tom Cruise are good friends, with Cruise attending the 2015 NASCAR banquet celebrating Gordon’s retirement. Given their close relationship, it makes sense that Gordon would be informed about any potential new installment of “Risky Business.
The movie “Days of Thunder” is well-known for its thrilling racing scenes, giving the film a realistic feel. It’s not hard to imagine that NASCAR could play a role in such productions once more, though there would undoubtedly be practical considerations to address.

Just recently, I watched Days of Thunder for the first time, and initially, I couldn’t understand why Tom Cruise would select it to kick off his sequel phase. However, after reflection, I now comprehend the choice.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but find it intriguing that Tom Cruise appears to be actively engaging with a NASCAR veteran regarding a project. The man has always seemed like one who firmly stands by his ideas and visions once he’s set his sights on them, and his dedication is nothing if not intense. This commitment, arguably, played a significant role in the triumph of “Top Gun: Maverick,” a film that leveraged cutting-edge technology.
As I ponder this potential “Days of Thunder” sequel, I find myself contemplating the impact of contemporary cameras on the project. Could they be a boon or a bane for the production? Only time will tell.
It’s challenging to conceive how you manage such a feat today since racers back then had cameras during races, and those cameras were quite bulky. Given the significant reduction in camera size over time, it might be possible, but what’s your secret? And how do you maintain realism and authenticity while executing this task?
If Tom Cruise is involved, there’s always a solution. Known for his love of challenges, it’s likely that if this sequel progresses in development, the producers will employ advanced technology to enhance the racing scenes. Some might find it surprising that Cruise would want to reprise the character of Cole Trickle, but given the potential for groundbreaking technology and a compelling narrative, there’s certainly motivation to move forward with the project.
Additionally, it’s not just one project on the horizon for the 62-year-old actor. Reports suggest that “Top Gun 3” may soon begin production. Meanwhile, he is also collaborating with filmmaker Alejandro Iñárritu on a movie and has a long-discussed SpaceX project from Doug Liman. With such a busy schedule, I’m optimistic that he, along with Jeff Gordon and others, will find time to bring a “Days of Thunder” sequel to fruition.
It might take some time for the sequel to materialize given Tom Cruise’s current work commitments. In the interim, why not rewatch the original 1990 film, available free on Pluto TV? Fans of Cruise can also catch him in his latest movie, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, premiering in theaters on May 23.
