Among Tom Cruise’s movies that demonstrate his versatility beyond action roles, one of my top picks is the hilarious comedy “Tropic Thunder“. In this film, Cruise portrayed Les Grossman, a swearing, hot-tempered studio executive. He took on this role after two conditions were met. However, Cruise didn’t just wear the fat suit, prosthetic hands, and bald cap for the 2008 comedy alone. He also reprised the character at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, during which he publicly criticized actor Michael Cera. I really wish there was footage of that moment.
In his recent chat on The Louis Theroux Podcast, actor Cera shared an interesting tale about meeting Tom Cruise. This encounter occurred when Cruise was filming pre-recorded segments for an awards ceremony, where his character Les Grossman interacted with numerous individuals entering and exiting. Among those people was Cera, who witnessed firsthand Cruise’s leadership qualities on set – a quality that may have led to the events detailed below.
In my very first encounter with him, I showed up, there was filming going on, and I found myself conversing with the screenwriter… We were merely murmuring during the shooting, yet they could still hear us. It felt like we were only about 40 feet apart. And Tom Cruise, whom I hadn’t ever met before, glanced at me in the middle of a scene, and he said, “Is that Michael Cera chattering during a take?” He was joking, but it also felt like a stern “please be quiet,” if you catch my drift? But oh, so surreal!
Today’s lesson, everyone: avoid disturbing Tom Cruise during filming, as he was playing Ethan Hunt for almost three decades in Mission: Impossible. Even though it seemed Michael Cera didn’t mean any harm, and Cruise wasn’t genuinely upset with him, Cruise made it a point to let Cera know that his timing was off. So, remember, don’t disrupt such an experienced actor while he’s on set during a take.

It’s hardly unexpected that Tom Cruise took such an action given his deep passion for filmmaking, which sets him apart even among other Hollywood celebrities. If only he had made a cameo as Les Grossman, swearing and all, the story would have been even more intriguing! Interestingly, the playful banter that Michael Cera mentions might not have occurred under such circumstances.
After encountering him, he exclaimed something along the lines of ‘Speaking during a take!’ I understood he was joking, so I responded with ‘Hey buddy, not me, it was the scriptwriter.’ He quickly replied, ‘Just joking, just joking,’ to which I playfully responded, ‘I’m kidding too.’
Although Tom Cruise and Michael Cera haven’t shared the silver screen together yet, I eagerly hope that day comes. If their professional relationship was amicable fifteen years ago, it will be interesting to witness their collaboration in a future film. Perhaps, if the rumored Les Grossman spinoff ever materializes, Cera might make an appearance – perhaps as a supporting character or even just a cameo as himself.
Currently, you can catch Michael Cera and Tom Cruise on the silver screen with “The Phoenician Scheme” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” respectively, as both movies are still playing in cinemas. Later this year, Michael Cera will reappear in the film adaptation of “The Running Man”, starring Glen Powell.
