Although two shows from CBS’ FBI franchise were recently canceled, fans of the procedural drama can find solace knowing that a brand-new spin-off has indeed been greenlit and will debut during the 2025-26 season. The most exciting news? Lucifer’s Tom Ellis is set to star as the main character in this upcoming series, which goes by the working title CIA for now.
By the Stipulated Date, Ellis is set to feature in a fresh series produced by Dick Wolf. In this production, showrunner David Hudgins resumes his role as lead. The executive producers include former CIA officer David Chasteen, Nicole Perlman, and Peter Jankowski. Similar to the main series, this new installment will deliver the suspense and excitement that fans have grown accustomed to from the franchise. The storyline revolves around two agents who form an unconventional partnership to combat various dangers.
As a movie aficionado, let me share my thoughts on “CIA” – a thrilling tale that pairs an unorthodox, quick-witted CIA operative (Ellis) with a disciplined, experienced FBI agent who values the law above all. Assigned to the New York CIA station, these two mismatched partners must navigate their differences and collaborate to tackle domestic threats. Surprisingly, they discover that their contrasting styles may just be the key to their success.
Ellis gained global recognition due to his portrayal of the devil in the popular show “Lucifer,” which moved from Fox to Netflix to complete its run. The character of Ellis from the DC comics featured in “The Sandman” was well-received by fans, partly because of Ellis’ versatile acting skills that enabled him to play both good and evil with a touch of humor; this talent was initially showcased in the British sitcom “Miranda.” As for who will act alongside him as his FBI partner in the upcoming series “CIA,” or if any characters from the original series will appear in the spinoff, those details remain undisclosed.
‘CIA’ Isn’t the Only CBS Spin-Off to Premiere in the Fall
CBS is counting on additional spin-offs, like “Tracker”, to sustain its top-tier ratings during the 2025-26 season. Apart from “CIA”, other series spun-off from existing shows, such as “Fire Country” and “Blue Bloods”, are set to debut later this year too.
1) In the show “Sheriff Country,” Morena Baccarin plays Mickey Fox, a sheriff who investigates crimes, maintains peace on the streets of Edgewater, deals with her ex-convict father, and confronts a puzzling event involving her estranged daughter. Subsequently, “Boston Blue” focuses on Danny Reagan, portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg from “Blue Bloods,” as he switches from New York to Boston to ensure law enforcement in the city streets.
Among the CBS shows returning this fall are “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage”, a spin-off from “The Big Bang Theory”, and “NCIS”. As of now, no premiere date has been announced for “CIA”; we will keep you updated with any new developments on that project.
