Returned to the stage mere days following his “walk off” at the Homecoming Concert over the weekend. Despite appearances suggesting dissatisfaction due to no awards being presented, it was simply part of the performance. Thus, it came as no shock to find Tom Hanks back on set for the 50th anniversary special, where he unveiled a memorable montage of sketches that have stood the test of time like a seasoned Hollywood star untouched by plastic surgery.
Tom Hanks recently participated in a special segment focusing on characters that have been labeled “canceled” by the executives and cast members of Saturday Night Live. As a member of the renowned “five-timers” club, he gave an appropriate introduction to the motley crew of questionable, offensive, or simply problematic figures who appeared on SNL. Hanks initiated his speech as follows:
[Tom Hanks‘ Monologue]
“Greetings, dear Saturday Night Live audience! Tonight, we have a special treat for you all – a gallery of characters that have caused quite a stir in their time here at SNL. Some might say they were controversial, others offensive, but let’s just call them the ‘rogues’ of our esteemed lineup. So without further ado, allow me to introduce…
Reflecting on our 50-year journey, let’s pause to remember and pay tribute to those from SNL who are no longer with us. This includes characters and skits that may not have aged gracefully in today’s context. I’m referring to certain characters, accents, and cultural wigs, which, without a doubt, were questionable in taste at the time. You, the audience, found them amusing. So, perhaps it’s time for self-reflection: if anyone deserves cancellation, shouldn’t it be you, the viewers? Just a thought. Now, let us remember them in our tribute.
The material ranged from jokes about sexual harassment intended as humor, to stereotypical and derogatory representations of racial minority groups, much like what one might find in a typical episode of South Park. However, for SNL, this marked the end of such sketches that will no longer be featured in the current or any future seasons of the program. You can watch the segment here.
‘SNL’ Has Never Been Afraid to Push Boundaries
Similar to many humor-based programs, what constitutes as funny can greatly vary among individuals. Occasionally, Saturday Night Live may have ventured beyond acceptable limits, particularly when revisiting older episodes. However, in more recent times, the show has continued to present content that stirs controversy. The montage we saw illustrates this point, demonstrating that although societal norms evolve, there will always be fresh topics under scrutiny through the lens of political correctness.
Reflecting on 50 years, Saturday Night Live (SNL) remains an exceptional blend of humor that’s both accessible for my grandmother and edgy enough to make her gasp. The writers deftly straddle the line between pushing boundaries and maintaining good taste, often subtly acknowledging moments when they may have nudged a toe too close to the forbidden territory of comedy. As the landscape of humor evolves, I can only imagine that in years to come, SNL will be commemorating the decline of sketches we find amusing today.
