Tom Hardy’s ‘MobLand’ Shatters Records with Paramount+ Premiere!

Taylor Sheridan’s expansive Western dramas and action series have been uncontested rulers on Paramount+ for quite some time now. But with Tom Hardy’s fresh gangland crime drama, , breaking streaming records in its debut, Sheridan might want to start checking his rearview mirror.

The show “MobLand” boasts a stellar lineup, featuring Hardy alongside Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, with Guy Ritchie serving as executive producer. Although the new series has received rave reviews, its biggest accolade is taking over Taylor Sheridan’s “Landman” to secure the title of the most-watched series premiere ever on Paramount+.

Sheridan has been a powerhouse on Paramount+, with “Landman” dethroning another Sheridan series, “Tulsa King,” in viewership. However, the throne seems to have shifted slightly now, as “MobLand” made a grand debut with an impressive 2.2 million global views on its first day. Given Hardy’s popularity among fans and the enduring appeal of crime dramas, it’s not entirely unexpected to see the show performing well on Paramount+. Yet, the strong start that “MobLand” has made exceeded many expectations.

As a passionate film buff, I’m thrilled about the prospect of a second season for the potential blockbuster collaboration between Hardy and Ritchie. Such a venture could solidify their reputation as powerhouse creators in the industry. Moreover, it may inspire Yellowstone‘s genius mind to push even harder in his forthcoming spinoffs, aiming to surpass his own exceptional standards.

‘MobLand’ Started Life as a ‘Ray Donovan’ Series

Over the past ten years, a multitude of crime-themed productions have emerged, often leaving some viewers feeling that newer entries are just imitations of what’s come before. Yet, when it comes to “MobLand”, the involvement of Ritchie as an Executive Producer and the impressive cast including Hardy, Brosnan, and Mirren has sparked interest in many, making them appreciate its unique offerings.

The series, MobLand, focuses on the ongoing rivalry between two powerful London-based crime families as they strive for worldwide supremacy. Amidst the chaos and illicit activities, a man named Harry Da Souza (Hardy) stands out due to his composure in violent situations and questionable dealings. This makes him an indispensable ally to The Harrigan’s corrupt enterprise. Harry bears striking resemblances to Ray Donovan, a character portrayed by Liev Schreiber, which may be due to the showrunner’s initial intentions to develop a prequel spin-off of the hit series, Ray Donovan, titled The Donovans. The similarities between Hardy and Schreiber’s characters reflect the showrunner’s early ambition to create a spin-off prequel of the popular series, Ray Donovan.

Similar to Dexter and Ray Donovan, both shows that concluded with movies in 2022 after seven seasons on Showtime, speculation about spinoffs didn’t wait long. Announced in February 2024, the project underwent changes towards the end of that year and was then rebranded twice, finally settling on the name MobLand (initially, it was to be called The Donovans, then The Associate). Despite not being directly connected to Ray Donovan, the mood and style of the new show share a strong connection with fans of that character, which could have contributed to its impressive debut.

Although MobLand is currently considered a limited series, its outstanding performance might swiftly alter that scenario. Be it a second season or another crime production, it’s highly likely that you’ll witness a reunion of Hardy and Ritchie in the near future on our screens.
