As a longtime fan who has seen Spider-Man swinging through the concrete jungle of New York City since the days of Tobey Maguire, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia as we gear up for Spider-Man 4. While the multiverse shenanigans in No Way Home were thrilling, I yearn for the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to return.
Tom Holland recently appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s late-night program to officially announce what many had already speculated: Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are collaborating once more for “Spider-Man 4.” Filming is expected to start in the summer of 2025. Earlier reports indicated that Destin Daniel Cretton, director of “Shang-Chi,” would take up the reins as director for this upcoming installment. Additionally, whispers have circulated about Spider-Man’s substantial role in “Avengers: Doomsday.” Given his prominence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the need for strong leadership to confront Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom, this rumor seems plausible.
Although Holland revealed the commencement of Spider-Man 4 and hinted at a potential timeline for filming, he was coy about several crucial details regarding the upcoming film, such as whether it would focus on a ground-level narrative or delve into a Multiverse saga.
Amongst Spider-Man enthusiasts, especially those active on social media, there’s been quite a split of opinions regarding this matter, largely due to the climax of the latest Spider-Man film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. This film presented a grand multiverse narrative, where characters from past Spiderman movies intertwined with Tom Holland’s universe, ultimately leading our hero to make a significant sacrifice in order to reestablish balance. With order restored, the question now is: What path should they take next? Let’s explore the potential options together.
Make Spider-Man 4 a Street-Level Story
It’d be great if we could let Tom Holland’s Spider-Man maintain his friendly neighborhood persona, something he hasn’t had much chance to do in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) lately. Since Avengers: Infinity War, we’ve seen him travel to space, Europe, and even Doctor Strange’s mirror dimension. He’s even met his untimely demise. This diversity of experiences is a key aspect of having Spidey in the MCU – it allows us to explore possibilities that were beyond the scope of the previous films featuring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man.
Instead, let’s return to the core essence of this character. Place him in an exciting New York City escapade, possibly with a few timeless antagonists. While Spider-Man is capable of saving the world, it’s not always necessary. Let’s observe him protecting his beloved city instead. Could there be assistance along the way?
Supporters of a street-based Spider-Man film are eager for Tom Holland’s character to team up with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, possibly leading to a confrontation with Wilson Fisk, also known as The Kingpin. It’s worth noting that Spidey and DD have already crossed paths in the past.
In the latest Disney+ series Echo, they’ve subtly initiated the development of a significant Kingpin storyline, hinted by Vincent D’Onofrio’s statement about his character considering a mayoral bid for New York City. This plot point was intriguing in the comics, as it would bring Spider-Man and Daredevil into conflict with Wilson Fisk’s potential rise to political power. This scenario would offer an excellent chance for Tom Holland’s Spiderman to interact with Daredevil, The Punisher, Moon Knight, and several other New York City superheroes.
Then again, Spider-Man 4 might be part of a larger story.
Make Spider-Man 4 a Multiversal Story
Regardless of whether Spider-Man fans prefer it or not, it appears that “Spider-Man 4” is woven into a larger narrative known as The Multiverse Saga, which seems to be the focus of many upcoming Marvel films. It seems that although Kang the Conqueror has been sidelined for now, the creative choices being made hint at the fact that all the movies leading up to “Avengers: Secret Wars” will have a multidimensional theme, much like how “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” brought Hugh Jackman back from an alternate reality.
Considering Destin Daniel Cretton’s involvement with Spider-Man 4, it seems plausible that the movie may lean towards a Multiverse narrative. Although Shang-Chi didn’t delve into the Multiverse, it did incorporate magical elements, and Spider-Man 4 could potentially expand on those themes, possibly exploring aspects like the power of the Ten Rings or the mystery hinted at in the mid-credits scene. So, what direction will this hint lead us in the next installment?
It’s possible that Marvel is planning to use the MCU films as stepping stones towards the grand storyline involving Doom. This could mean that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man might collaborate with the upcoming Fantastic Four or team up with Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), who has recently traversed the galaxies alongside Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). While it’s true that Holland experienced a Multiverse blast in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, it seems that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has a more extensive narrative to unfold, so some elements of “Spider-Man 4” might be instrumental in advancing this plot.
For me, I’m more interested in a street-level narrative for Spider-Man. I want to see him battling a familiar adversary in Manhattan – perhaps Michael Mando reprising his role as Scorpion, or even introducing Black Cat. A gang war storyline could be engaging with characters like Hammerhead, Tombstone, and other street-level criminals yet to appear on the big screen. Later, we can enjoy Spidey teaming up with the Avengers. If you’re making a Spider-Man film, then focus on that – keep Iron Man, Nick Fury, Doctor Strange, and the rest in the background for now.
