Following a year-long break from acting, Tom Holland is gearing up for a busy schedule. Apart from Spider-Man 4, he will appear in Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey on the big screen, and he is anticipated to reprise his Spiderman character in upcoming Avengers movies. However, his plans don’t stop there, as the actor has his sights set on a gritty drama that could earn him award recognition. Holland will star in an upcoming adaptation of one of John Grisham’s most renowned novels.
According to Deadline, actor Holland has taken up the role for the 1997 novel “The Partner,” a legal thriller penned by longtime author and former Mississippi State Representative. Holland will star in and produce the movie through Universal Pictures, following a script penned by Graham Moore, winner of an Oscar for his work on “The Imitation Game.” Initially, John Lee Hancock (director of “The Founder” and “The Blind Side”) was intended to direct “The Partner,” but the project eventually found its lead in Holland as Patrick Lanigan, a lawyer on the run. As of now, there is no director assigned for the film.
Renowned modern author John Grisham is celebrated for both his written works and their subsequent film adaptations. From “The Pelican Brief” to “The Firm”, Grisham boasts a long list of well-known titles from his impressive body of work. While “The Partner” was a bestseller, it has yet to be adapted into a movie. Here’s the official synopsis for “The Partner”.
Originally, Patrick Lanigan was a popular, high-earning junior partner at a prosperous law firm in Mississippi. However, he betrayed the trust of his firm by stealing an astonishing sum of ninety million dollars. As a result, he had to flee to escape the consequences.
For a span of four years, he eluded wealthy and influential individuals who were relentless in their pursuit of him, with no limits to their efforts. Eventually, as fate would have it, on the border of the Amazon rainforest, they eventually managed to locate him.
Currently, Patrick is making his way home, and in the very city where his remarkable journey began on the banks of Mississippi, a momentous trial is set to commence. With prosecutors circling like predators, Patrick’s attorney meticulously constructs a defense, while Patrick’s lover implores for his salvation and his former associates anticipate their retribution. A new chapter in this intricate tale is about to unfold because Patrick Lanigan, the most despised white-collar offender of the era, holds a secret that no one else on Earth possesses – the truth.
Tom Holland is Already Expanding His Creative Horizons
Fans of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man might not realize that he has intentionally broadened his acting roles, even though these films didn’t win critical acclaim. However, Holland garnered praise for his unconventional performances in “Cherry,” directed by the Russo brothers, and “The Crowded Room,” a project on Apple TV+ that was heavily panned by critics. Notably, “The Crowded Room” is significant because the challenging role of a young man with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) prompted Holland to take a year-long hiatus. Furthermore, “The Crowded Room” was filmed in an environment that Holland described as marked by a lot of tension and negativity.
In this upcoming film, “The Partner,” Tom Holland takes on another complex character that is neither entirely virtuous nor heroic. This role could potentially earn him accolades, although it’s unlikely that this was his primary motivation for accepting the part. However, given the buzz surrounding the film, it’s hard not to notice the signs pointing towards an award nomination. Prior to landing the transformative Spider-Man role, Holland was seriously considered for a Best Supporting Actor nod for “The Impossible” at just 14 years old. Furthermore, Apple has been actively campaigning for his nomination in the role of “Cherry,” a part that required him to endure hardships reminiscent of those in “The Crowded Room.
