As a seasoned connoisseur of art and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I can’t help but feel a surge of admiration and nostalgia upon hearing about the ‘FORTY YEARS OF PRIDE’ exhibition at Diesel Art Gallery. Having grown up in the shadow of societal norms that often felt suffocating, artists like Tom of Finland were my beacons of hope and defiance.
The Diesel Art Gallery in Tokyo is currently running an exhibition titled ‘FORTY YEARS OF PRIDE’, which is a collaboration between Diesel and the Tom of Finland Foundation. This show, on display until August 14, is part of the larger Diesel x Tom of Finland Foundation Pride initiative, celebrating four decades of the Foundation’s impact on LGBTQ+ art.
Tom of Finland, famous for his daring portrayals of strong, liberated men, broke through societal expectations and inspired the global LGBTQ+ community. His art had a profound impact on influential figures like Freddie Mercury, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Paul Gaultier. The showcase not only presents Tom’s renowned pieces but also offers a virtual reality tour, allowing visitors to step into his unique universe.
For the third consecutive year, Diesel has teamed up with the Tom of Finland Foundation for Pride events. This partnership has grown to include a special capsule collection, an emerging erotic art competition, and worldwide events. The project aims to honor the Foundation’s mission of safeguarding queer art and fostering acceptance, liberty, and affection. In addition to showcasing artwork, the exhibition will provide merchandise related to artists and introduce the 2024 Diesel x Tom of Finland Pride capsule collection, which highlights pieces by international creators.
