Tom Selleck Says He’s “Frustrated” by ‘Blue Bloods’ Cancellation: “Show Was Always Taken for Granted”

As a long-time fan who has followed Tom Selleck‘s career since his Magnum P.I. days, it’s heartening to see his passion for Blue Bloods and Frank Reagan echo my own feelings. The show has been a staple of Friday nights for 14 years, consistently delivering quality drama and family dynamics that resonate with viewers.

Tom Selleck is currently grappling with finding the right words to bid farewell to Frank Reagan. Recently, he expressed his frustration over CBS’ decision to end Blue Bloods, feeling that the show had been overlooked and undervalued during its 14-year run on the network.

In his recent conversation with TV Insider, Frank Selleck (the actor portraying the NYPD Police Commissioner on Blue Bloods) mentioned that during the past eight episodes, he’s been more eager to discuss the show’s continued success rather than speculating about its conclusion.

Selleck mentioned several unnamed hit shows from 2023-2024 and stated, “Excluding the three sports series, we ranked sixth!” Despite not wanting to sound grumpy like an old man saying ‘stay off my property’, he admitted that he’s still taken aback by the network’s decision to end such a successful show.

He stated that if one were to propose a show to a TV network, saying ‘This will dominate your worst time slot and secure your victory on Friday nights for the next 15 years,’ it would be hard to accept as fact. His disappointment stems from the fact that the program was often overlooked because it succeeded right from the start.

Selleck noted that it would “require some time to untangle everything” and he’ll need space to acclimate to a schedule without Blue Bloods. “Following the weekend [of filming the final episode], I said, ‘I must go to bed early tonight because I have to record my lines for Monday.’ However, there was no Monday. It will take some time to get used to it.

In the same conversation, Selleck hinted at some aspects of the final episode’s plot. He mentioned, “The family gathering essentially brings the Reagan clan back together. Erin’s daughter Nicky (played by Sami Gayle) was present, as well as Jack (Tony Terraciano), Danny’s eldest son. We all felt it would be fitting to keep the set intimate for this family dinner and avoid any unnecessary drama.

The reunion was particularly meaningful, Selleck stated, as he views the cast members as his kin. “Not a single one of them hesitated to return,” he added. “Many shows don’t conclude so harmoniously – there’s often rivalry and various issues – but we seem to have surpassed that. It’s something we can all be proud of and reminisce about.
