Supporters of the television series “Blue Bloods” were disappointed when CBS declared that the lengthy police drama focusing on the Reagan family would conclude permanently towards the end of 2024, creating a significant void in the 2025 TV lineup. The cast, including leading actor Tom Selleck, shared this sentiment. Remarkably, at 80 years old, Selleck continues to show his dedication by putting in substantial effort on set.
It’s not surprising at all that whispers started last week about Selleck potentially reprising his cherished role as Detective Jesse Stone. This development certainly brings joy, and I can’t help but speculate if another character penned by author Robert B. Parker might also be revived.
Spenser Was Parker’s Main Character
Prior to Parker’s passing in 2010, he penned forty novels featuring a Boston detective called simply “Spenser,” with neither a surname nor first name provided. As there is no given name for this character, readers are left to speculate about the identity of Spenser. These books have held a special place in my heart since my teen years and I’ve had the pleasure of reading all forty, as well as a forty-first, which was unfinished upon Parker’s death at 78. The remaining work was completed by Parker’s agent, Helen Brann.
Instead of Parker, let’s talk about this author who penned nine Jesse Stone novels. He also created another character named Sunny Randall, but she hasn’t been brought to life on screen yet. It’s worth noting that Spenser is the author’s most significant creation. Interestingly, the TV series “Spenser: For Hire” was based on the Spenser novels, long before Tom Selleck portrayed Jesse Stone in a television movie.

Spenser Has Been Adapted A Few Times Before With Mixed Results
In the 1980s, Robert Urich portrayed the role of Spenser on the ABC series titled “Spenser: For Hire“. The show enjoyed a brief period of success and eventually spawned a spinoff, focusing on the character Hawk, played by Avery Brooks. Hawk, who is one of Spenser’s key associates in the books, also had his own series titled “A Man Called Hawk“.
From 1999 to 2001, Joe Mantegna portrayed Spenser in a series of TV films on A&E. To be frank, these productions weren’t particularly memorable. However, they were superior to what transpired later when, in 2020, Mark Wahlberg took the lead role in the Netflix original film, Spenser Confidential.
I found the film “Spenser Confidential” rather underwhelming. Many of us, being fans of Spenser, looked forward to this project with anticipation. However, it seems that the film fell short in numerous aspects. To begin with, the creators significantly altered Spenser and Hawk’s backgrounds, which bore little resemblance to their literary counterparts. Mark Wahlberg didn’t quite embody the character as we know him from the books, and the movie, starting with Spenser in prison, was a stark departure from the original character.
It’s evident that Jesse Stone remains a beloved figure, as evidenced by authors Ace Atkins and Mike Lupica continuing the Spenser saga. This suggests that there remains a strong demand for this iconic character, making now an ideal moment for him to make a comeback in a series that stays faithful to the original books.
